Beginner Bridge: Club Course

Bidding in the 21st Century, the first course in the ACBL beginner bridge series will run April 25, 2012 – June 20, 2012, Wednesday afternoons, 1:30-3:30.  Alina Grier and Carol Purdy will lead the classes.  Both are ACBL-certified bridge instructors: Alina is also an experienced tournament player and Silver Life Master; Carol is a Club Director and Bronze Life Master.

Learn to play bridge; no prior experience is required.  We’ll cover rules and mechanics of the game, and then turn our attention to playing it well, with elementary bidding and play of the cards.  In bidding, we’ll focus on the most common situations, discussing how to open the bidding, respond, and rebid.  In play, we’ll discuss the most common types of hands, and how to make a plan for winning the most tricks, whether declaring or defending.

The required textbook for this course is Bidding in the 21 Century, the ACBL Club Series textbook.

Twin City Bridge Club provides ACBL-sanctioned duplicate bridge games, open to the public. We also promote the game of bridge through education and outreach.

We play bridge at the St. Joseph Public Library.  Any Monday or Thursday that the library is open, we are there.

All of our games start at 12:45 p.m.; we ask players to check in by 12:30. There is a small fee to play. Please pre-arrange your partnerships for these games; singles are not guaranteed a partner at any session. Players new to our games may request help finding partners via our email address: twincitybridge@gmail.com.

Our Monday skill-building session is a place to practice and improve at duplicate bridge. Players may ask bidding and play questions of the director or "coach of the day". Rules and etiquette are explained as appropriate. Life Masters at this game are asked to play with non-Life-Master partners, and to maintain a helpful demeanor. Note: special events preempt the Monday game; it becomes a traditional open game, at which all partnerships are welcome and coaching is not available.

Our Thursday session is an open duplicate game. All bridge players are welcome.

Berrien Youth Bridge is our community service project, currently operating at Upton Middle School in St. Joseph.  We introduce mini-bridge to 6th-graders in an after-school club setting.  Helpers are welcome: contact us at twincitybridge@gmail.com to get involved.  Click to see rules of mini-bridge.
