We have a new case assignment.
PHILIPPINES - Indigenous rights activist James Balao was abducted on 17 September 2008 by armed men, who told witnesses they were police, in the northern city of Baguio.
A court has ordered the authorities to reveal where he is, and do no further harm to him, but has not authorized his family to look for him in places of detention. We call on the authorities to make his whereabouts public, and release him immediately and unconditionally, unless he is promptly charged with a recognizably criminal offense, as he appears to be a prisoner of conscience, detained solely forthe peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression and association.
Details on his case will be sent to us and specific actions will be recommended.
Please call Gary King at 763-571-7696 for more information.
