I started tutoring six years ago, early in 2002, in a University of Washington program called the Robinson Center for Young Scholars.
They provide numerous programs for gifted middle and high school
students, and I was a teaching assistant in History, Literature, and
the humanities in general. I discovered a love of helping students
write, leading them from original ideas through outlining and drafting,
until they reach a finished product they can be proud of.
I entered the University of Washington as a freshman at the age of 14 and as a
National Merit Scholar, and graduated five years later with a BA in
History and a minor in Linguistics. I returned to the UW for
post-grad classes in Classics, maintained a GPA above 3.7, and achieved departmental honors. My test-prep experience started in 2005, when I began work for Kaplan Premier, the tutoring division of Kaplan Test Prep. Kaplan extensively trains its tutors in both one-on-one tutoring technique and on test-taking strategies. I visited the homes of students of a huge range of abilities and customized courses for them on the SAT, ACT, and SAT subject tests. My students regularly saw increases in the hundreds of points on the SAT, and I was named tutor of the year for 2006. I also pursue my own writing projects. For the last two years I have offered feedback, revision, and proofreading help to fiction writers on a non-professional basis. I love everything about both writing and teaching!
