Driving in Baltimore

 
 
Driving
To drive in Maryland, you must have a valid driver's license. Each state in the United States has their own driver's license and they are valid throughout every state in the United States. The Maryland driver's license
is given by the Maryland Vehicle Administration. If you have brought a driver's license with you, be sure it is valid. Check the time limits below. After the time limit is over, you must get a Maryland driver's license.
 
License from your Home Country
Valid for 30 days
 
International driver's license
Valid for 1 year
 
TO GET A MARYLAND DRIVER'S LICENSE, you must be at least 16 years old. You DO
 
NOT have to have a Social Security Number. Just take the following documents to the Motor Vehicle Association (MVA) and be sure t hey have your name in the same way on them:
  1. Passport
  2. Form I-94 card (should be in your passport)
  3. Current Form 1-20 (and any old I-20's you may have)
  4. Driver's License from your home country or your international license, if you have one
  5. Two kinds of Proof of Maryland address such as mail that shows your name and address, a telephone bill, electric bill, Checking or savings account statement from a bank, credit card bill, or a copy of your lease.
  6. Another form of identification with your signature on it such as a picture ID, canceled check, or a credit card.

At the MVA, you will take a:

      1. Written test: 20 questions, multiple choice (available in many languages)

– It may be a score of 85% or better is required to pass

– A test is available in Spanish, Korea, Polish, and Russian.

      2. Vision test

      3. Road test using your own car.

 

The fee for a Maryland driver's license is 50 USD. You must also take a short 3-hour Drug & Alcohol class. Locations for this class are available in the ELI office Literature Center.

 
The MVA Offices nearest to the Towson University are in Baltimore City, Glen Burnie, Bel Air, and Essex. They are open from Monday to Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. - noon. Check the website for addresses.
