Attendees: (Youth) Seamus M, Bryan E, Parker S, Fox S, Mikey V, Logan M, David R. (Adults) M Tehan, E Showalter, K Richardson, S Manley, D Elliott, T McKittrick, T Carr, A Willyard, and W Cloe.
The agenda we followed is in the first 2 pages of the attachment. Here was the process: The boys had a pre-meeting to discuss these items:
—What activities went very well last year? —What Scouting Skills does the troop excel at? —Which activities had shortcomings? What improvements are needed? —Do any Scouting Skills need special attention in the coming year? —How well are the meetings run? Is it a "Scout led" troop? What improvements are needed? You can see the results of this in the attachement (pages 1-5). The page numbers in the attachment refer to the flip chart pages filled out at the planning session. I tried to maintain the chronology of these pages.
On page 6 and 7 we discussed goals for the troop. There are many goals that should be done anyway but this was an exercise to vote on the short term and long term goals for the troop.
Page 8 shows the results of voting for this exercise - the goals for the troop.
Pages 9 & 10 show an exercise to discuss the memorable events for the troop. Page 9 is from the youth, page 10 is from the adult discussion.
Pages 11 - 13 are event discussions that were held with the entire troop on the Tuesday before the planning meeting.
Page 14 lists those items that the youth leadership wants to do again.
Page 15 is a bar graph to show the rank distribution of the boys. While we are generally flat in the lower ranks, we have an abundance of Life Scouts. This shows a great need for recruitment.
Page 16 shows the high adventure activities and the votes those activities received. These will be presented to the committee to see which activities we can do.
Page 17 lists all of the weekend trips and the votes they received. Page 18 was the voting for the day trips. These were no put on the calendar, but should be discussed in the regular PLC meetings.
Page 19 is a list of weekend trips listed by their ranking.
Only after this effort was there an attempt to put these events to the calendar. The calendar has been updated and can be found on the troop website.
As a result of this weekend, we have short term goals, long term goals, a calendar with most items completed (some weekends have place holders), and a reference for future meetings.
The last item the boys did was to have a PLC to plan the meetings. The general program is as follows: 8/18 - Lashings & catapult planning 8/25 - Build a catapult and meal planning for the kick back weekend 9/1 - Water baloons w/catapult, talk about troop elections 9/8 - no meeting No decision was made about the destination for the November weekend campout (11/20-11/22) - this will need to be decided soon.
Let Mr. Tehan know if you have any questions. |

The reenactment mentioned in the update...
Your troop is invited to attend and participate in a free performance of The Parsons' Cause--Prelude to Revolution. Five performances will be held this summer. Please see the attachment for details. By attending a performance, scouts can fully or partially complete these merit badge requirements: Citizenship in the Nation -- Requirements 2A and 6 American Heritage -- Requirements 2A, 4B and 4D In addition, scouts are invited to earn service credits by acting as ushers for the performances. The Parsons’ Cause – Prelude to Revolution"But what do we mean by the American Revolution? Do we mean the American war? The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people." -John AdamsThe "minds and hearts of the people" began to change in Hanover County, Virginia on December 1, 1763. It was there and then that an obscure country lawyer named Patrick Henry challenged the authority of the Church of England and the King of England. In The Parsons’ Cause, as Henry’s case became known, Henry thundered against the King’s disavowal of a law passed by the Virginia House of Burgesses. In addition to thrusting Henry into the forefront of Colonial legal and political circles, The Parsons’ Cause established part of the foundation for the coming American Revolution. The Parsons’ Cause Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit corporation whose mission is to sponsor reenactments of and promote the historical importance of The Parsons’ Cause. The Foundation is pleased to present free public shows of The Parsons’ Cause—Prelude to Revolution, during the summer of 2009. The shows will be held at the same Hanover Courthouse where Henry tried the case in 1763.The reenactments will commence at 11:00 a.m. on the following dates: Saturday, July 18 Saturday, August 1 Saturday, August 15 The reenactment is about 45 minutes in length, and attendees are asked to participate by serving as jurors, parties to the case, gentlemen justices, or parsons. Each attendee is also asked to render his or her verdict in the case by way of ballot. In addition, door prizes will be awarded at each of the summer shows. The Foundation invites you, your family and friends to attend one of the shows. For more information, e-mail jtuckeriii@comcast.net , call 804-837-4900, or view our The Foundation’s website:www.parsonscause.org.In addition to attending a show, your may enjoy a tour of Hanover Tavern (call 804-537-5050 for tour information), which sits across the road from the Courthouse, as well as brunch at the Tavern’s signature restaurant, Michelle’s (call 804-537-5250 for reservations). The Foundation hopes you will be able join us this summer and step back in time to 1763! |

Three quick things - 1: We will have a regular meeting next Tuesday night - see you there. 2: The trip to the Spy Museum has been postponed.
3: The message below was forwarded from Mrs. Coffey.
Good evening all. Just a reminder, because the time for camp is fast approaching. I would like the selections for merit badges turned in to me by the end of the week. I realize that we are not meeting this week, so I am requesting that you please email your selections to me. The list for merit badges and any prerequisites were handed out a few weeks ago, so I feel this is ample time to have made your choices. This does not include the first year boys who will be taking the swimming and leatherwork merit badges, along with the Trail Blazer program.
Speaking of first year boys. There is still time for our brand new guys (Sean, Daniel and Luke) to join in with the troop and enjoy a week at summer camp. Just let me know. We are leaving on June28, and will be back by noon on July 4th. the cost is $210.00 There are still some outstanding deposits due. If you are not sure what your ballance is, you may call me at 869-1995 or you can check with Mr Showalter at the next regular meeting.
Also as a reminder to parents of all scouts who are taking regular daily medications. It is suggested that you please do not take your son off regular medications for his week at camp. We have found that this can add stress to a boy while he is away from home, and detract from his enjoyment of summer camp. The last few years at camp, with the permission of the parents, the leaders have very successfuly taken on the responsibility of administering medications to the boys. This has worked very well.
Thank you to all leaders who have committed to being at camp, with our boys. we really do have a fantastic troop. My email address is at1mom@yahoo.com thanks again.

Two things to remember for our meeting Tuesday night. The AT trip has been rescheduled for the weekend of 4/17-4/19. Please check your calendars and be ready to make firm commitments and do planning at our meeting on April 14th! Mr. Manley is helping to take the lead on this trip, but I’m sure he would welcome help! White water trip information was given out at our last meeting a copy of the form was e-mailed as well. (Note: the tentative dates on the form should be July 13, 20 & 27). Please bring back these forms at our next meeting, April 14th! The trip and the date will with the most votes will be the one we plan. Please indicate the trip preferred and the dates you will commit to. If you are not going to be at the meeting, you may reply to this e-mail with your preferences. (But you should come to the meeting anyway – remember we’re planning for the AT weekend!)

Elections are on Tuesday. Please be prepared to discuss your choices for SPL, Patrol Leader and other positions. We will only elect the SPL and Patrol Leaders, but we will also put together the team that will lead the troop. I would like to have any who wants a position to talk about their qualifications, why they want the position, and what they will do for the troop. You should fill out the last page of this form -> http://www.troop555.net/documents/Troop%20555%20Leadership%20Positions.pdfThis weekend is the campout at Brady Saunders. We will be doing meal planning for this, so come prepared to commit. Bicycles are allowed for the older boys - see Mrs. Coffey for details. Since Spring Break is next week, I want to move the PLC to this Thursday 4/2. All of the new leadership needs to attend. |
