We return, once again, to Big Hollow Sportsman's Club, on March 20-22, as we welcome our Pack 28 Webelos (and others?) to become part of our troop!
DIRECTIONS TO CAMP: Go west on War Memorial just west of Shoppes at Grand Prairie to LR Nelson. Take a right on Trigger Rd. Then left on Grange Hall Rd. Big Hollow Sportsman’s Club is about 1.25 miles west of Trigger Road, on the right hand (north) side of Grange Hall. It is immediately west of Echo Valley Farms. We shall try to mark it so it is easily identified!!

Yea! We are going somewhere DIFFERENT this month! (Not that we don't love Wokanda and Ingersoll!) We are going to Sand Ridge State Forest, near Manito, which is kinda past Pekin! Here is one link to some details about this place. It is very cool, and quite different than what we usually see! http://www.stateparks.com/sand_ridge.htmlTo get there, follow IL Rt 29 south out
of Pekin to the Manito Road, turn west and go to Manito, about 20 miles.
In Manito, watch for the sign for Mason County Road 2500N and again turn
west (right). In about 6 miles you will have entered the forest. From
either entrance, follow our clearly marked signs to the facility or destination
of your choice.
For more information contact site personnel
at Sand Ridge State Forest, P.O. Box 111, Forest City, IL 61532 or by
phone at 309-597-2212 or by fax at 309-597-224 Plan on bringing maps and compasses, because this place is huge (7200+ acres), and it will help us navigate around if we get lost! |

Hi everyone! Please plan on attending the Council-wide mass at St Mary's Cathedral. Be there around 3:00pm, with mass starting at 3:30pm. All attending Scouts receive a patch for this event. Following mass, we go to St. Joseph's Church, south of the Civic Center, to serve and clean up after the reception.

TENTATIVE Date: November 14-16 Skill: "Backpacking, Hiking and more!" Location: Ingersoll Scout Reservation
Departure Information:We are meeting at St. Thomas Old Gym NO LATER THAN 5:30.
Dinner should be eaten before arriving or along the way. Packs should
be fully packed (with clothes and sleeping bags in PLASTIC) and you must have extra room to accommodate
troop/patrol gear, food, tents. Please be sure to make all corrections
to your pack from last Monday's meeting. Weather is expected to be cold
(temps in 30s or 40s) and possibly snowy and/or rainy so plan
accordingly. Especially be sure that you have rain gear and a pack
cover in an easily accessed pouch on your pack.
This November, Troop 28 is going on a backpacking trek for one weekend at Ingersoll Scout Reservation. It is similar, but much smaller scale, to the week-long Wilderness Factor Trek that was a part of the summer camp program at Ingersoll. Because this trek will involve a great deal of hiking and is considered “high adventure”, we are limiting this campout to those scouts who are First Class Rank. We will be hiking for most of the weekend along the outskirts of Ingersoll, exploring areas of camp that many of our scouts have never seen before. Since we will not be close to main camp facilities and will be moving locations each night, those scouts who attend will be responsible for carrying their appropriate portion of troop/patrol gear. This will include items such as food, cooking items and tents, as well as their own personal gear. Tent assignments will be made prior to departure, and partners may take turns carrying the tent or split up the parts. Because you will be responsible for carrying more than just your personal gear, it is necessary that you pack lightly and leave all luxury items at home (cots, pillows, etc.) One of the most important things that is required for this trek is a camping backpack. Backpacks either have an internal or external frame. They can be purchased at stores such as Dick’s Sporting Goods. Duffel bags and school backpacks will NOT be acceptable. Scouts, please remember all of the tips that we discussed at our meeting with Mr. Pitzen when packing your pack.
ALL CELL PHONES ARE TO BE LEFT IN THE CARS. Adults will have phones on them for emergency purposes only.
Bring at least 32oz of drinkable WATER (not Gatorade etc) with you, in a canteen, Nalgene, or other spill proof container.
PLEASE bring digital cameras with charged batteries! This will be a memorable event, so take lots of photos!
We aim to be leaving Ingersoll to return home no later than 11:00am on Sunday. |
