Last year, we held informal and loosely structured debates on various types of governments (democracy, oligarchy, anarchy, et al). This year we plan to hold a more structured debate. The topic has not yet been chosen, so email us suggestions. Schedule (2 groups will debate per day and a stopwatch will be used); Group 1 opening (3 min) Group 2 opening (3 min) Group 1 cross examination (4 min) Group 2 cross examination (4 min) Group 1 closing remarks (3 min) Group 2 closing remarks (3 min) Totaling 20 min (12:30-12:50) The following are some suggested topics of discussion: 1) In the novel Ender's Game by Orson S. Card the world is governed by a united world federation of sorts. Should the world be ruled under one government? If so should it be a strong federal government or a weak confederation made up of powerful countries. 2) Debate between determinism and randomness. Determinism being the belief that everything is predetermined and that all events are inevitable consequences of antecedent causes. Randomness is the quality of lacking any predictable order or plan.
