Sorry

posted Oct 22, 2010 12:02 AM by Shubhodeep Mukherji

Sorry about the messup today.  I found out last minute that science bowl practice was cancelled because of senior meeting.  Also, only Ebin and Hafsah solved the problem from last time.  We also had our first lecture given by non-triumvirs, Richard.

Change in Plans

posted Oct 19, 2010 9:43 PM by Shubhodeep Mukherji

Practice will be different this week.  This week on Thursday, second half of lunch is the first meeting for science bowl in Mr.Wiley's room.  I encourage everyone to attend.  So, Logic Club meeting is essentially cancelled, but you will get Logic Club points THIS TIME to come to science bowl practice.  The challenge problem for this week is still up for points.  I had planned to briefly go over the problem at our meeting on thursday, but that won't happen so it might happen next week.  Also, the plan for this week was to go over old A&M math problems, so that won't happen either.  Instead, I will make one of the A&M problems the problem of the week for next week and this problem will be posted on the website hopefully by Thursday.

Problem of the week is back!!!  The problems will be posted on the board outside Mr. Wiley's room.  Hopefully, a new problem will posted every week.   The problems could fun riddles or math problems.  The problems will also be discussed briefly at the beginning of our meetings.  If anyone solves the problem by that time, then they will get either 5 to 15 points depending on the difficulty of the problem.  Have fun solving problems!

Points

The points list has been updated.  You get 5 points for attending every meeting and 20 points for giving a lecture, which is strongly recommended.  Points will also be given for taking the LTest and taking part in other club events/competitions.   Thanks to Muhammad, we have patches to give out this year for logic club.  Although, we have a lot of patches in stock, we will not give them to everyone.  So, the people with the most points will get the patches at the end of the year.  This number is not yeat decided at the moment.  So, if you want a patch, show that you care by attending meetings, giving lectures, and taking part in club events.

Logic Club Debate

posted Sep 13, 2009 2:13 PM by Muhammad Shamim   [ updated Nov 15, 2009 9:47 PM ]

Last year, we held informal and loosely structured debates on various types of governments (democracy, oligarchy, anarchy, et al).
This year we plan to hold a more structured debate.
The topic has not yet been chosen, so email us suggestions.

Schedule (2 groups will debate per day and a stopwatch will be used);

Group 1 opening (3 min)
Group 2 opening (3 min)

Group 1 cross examination (4 min)
Group 2 cross examination (4 min)

Group 1 closing remarks (3 min)
Group 2 closing remarks (3 min)

Totaling 20 min (12:30-12:50)

The following are some suggested topics of discussion:

1) In the novel Ender's Game by Orson S. Card the world is governed by a united world federation of sorts. Should the world be ruled under one government? If so should it be a strong federal government or a weak confederation made up of powerful countries.

2) Debate between determinism and randomness. Determinism being the belief that everything is predetermined and that all events are inevitable consequences of antecedent causes. Randomness is the quality of lacking any predictable order or plan.

For any other debate suggestions or comments please e-mail Mr. Grimaldo.
