WSMTA DISTRICT VI
INFORMATION &
ACTIVITIES
Tri-Cities Chapter is one of four local
chapters in District VI. The other chapters are Sunn Valley,
Yakima-Ellensburg & Walla-Walla. We are one of seven districts
in the Washington State Music Teachers’ Association. The District
Vice-President is invited by the Washington State Education Board to
serve a two-year term on the Board of Directors. Each District
Vice-President oversees the activities unique to their district.
DISTRICT VI ACTIVITES
Workshop:
A workshop is organized by the
Vice-President and held usually in the Fall of the year. A short
business meeting is held followed by a clinician or presenter who
gives a full day workshop. This is an event for professional
enrichment that sometimes includes master classes: it has become a
good time to meet and socialize with music teachers within our
district.
Non-keyboard Play-Off Competition:
While the Spring Awards Competition is
held for pianist in our chapter to select students for the WSMTA
State Conference recitals, the Non-keyboard competition is held for
all the vocalist, string and wind players from the four local
chapters. One judge is invited to select representatives from
District VI to perform. The number of students selected is
determined by the total of students who participated in the WSMTA
Adjudication above level IV. Any student who competes must have met
the requirements and performed in the WSMTA Adjudication prior to the
play-offs that current year.
Applications to compete in this event
are mailed directly to vocal, string and wind teachers who have had
students participating in the WSMTA Adjudications. This form is also available on the Tri-Cities
Chapter home page.
Washington State Conference District
VI Luncheon Meeting:
At the June conference teachers meet to
talk over the budget and business of the district.
Summer Camp Scholarship:
Two scholarships are currently
available up to $500 towards tuition to attend summer camps. They
may be applied for based on need as determined by the teacher. A one page paper written about what music
means to the student and why they would like to attend camp is
required with the application. The president of each chapter may
submit up to two applicants per year.
These scholarships have been established by Elaine Smith, in memory of Elmer and Louise Foskett.
