As a class, we will be reading the adolescent novel Speak. The main character, Melinda, uses art as a way to express her inner emotions about her rape. Using Photobucket, the class will create a photo album that includes images and photos that express emotions that Melinda expresses throughout the novel. The line that each image represents from the novel will be located under the image or picture. As the teacher, I will create the album, and have students add their images and pictures. I feel that this is an activity that allows students to get inside the head of Melinda - helping them to create a sense of empathy for the character. Close textual reading is needed in order to complete the album, and students will learn how to connect art (visual) with literature.
