2008-2009 Season

TBVL is the states only Boys Volleyball League formed by the Cary YMCA (CYBVC), Chapel Hill Volleyball Association (CHAVC) and Fuquay-Varina Athletic Association (FVAA) Boys Volleyball clubs in the Winter of 2009 from January - April. The goal of this league is to provide regular competition level matches that are local to the area, inexpensive, and easy to attend by using practice dates at our local clubs.

League Summary:
Teams will be formed in the Triangle (Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Fuquay-Varina, Chapel Hill) areas of North Carolina.   Each team will play one home and one away match against all other teams in the league.  All sites used for matches must be sanctioned and approved by the Carolina Region USAV office.

2009 League Championships:
On April 19th, 28 boys from four teams participated the inaugural Tri Boys Volleyball League (TBVL) Championship at the Cary Family YMCA. The league is for boys age 15-18 and includes two teams from the Cary YMCA Boys Volleyball Club (CYBVC), one from Chapel Hill Area Volleyball Club (CHAVC) and one from Fuquay-Varina Athletic Association (FVAA).

Each team played a six match regular season to determine the seeding for the championships.  CYBVC-1 beat CYBVC-2 in the first semi-finals, two sets to zero. FVAA beat CHAVC two sets to zero in the other semifinal.  In the match for third place CYBVC-2 beat CHAVC, two to one.  CYBVC-1 beat FVAA, two to one, in the finals. The final match included a remarkable comeback in the second set by FVAA, down 21-16 and facing elimination, behind excellent serving by Sean Smith.

Results and Match Info

Jan 9,2009  CHAVC vs CYBVC-1 3-1 (25-22 25-22 22-25 25-21)

The Chapel Hill boys won the first ever Tri Boys Volleyball League match 3 wins to 1.  All of the sets were very competitive and at a very high level.  This event marked the first time in North Carolina history for a boys volleyball event of this type. Outstanding setting by both Simon Stiffler and young Yize Dong helped Chapel Hill stay in control the match.  Power attacks by Joseph Lucido and blocking by Tyler Malpass and Chris Hawk kept the Cary team in each game.  Thanks to everyone that helped make our first match a success. Special thanks to Charlie Yang and Mike O'Connor for the Officials training provided.

Jan 25,2009  CYBVC-2 vs FVAA 3-1 (31-29 25-21 14-25 25-23)

In a scrappy, hard fought match, the Cary-2 boys (1-0) held off the Spartans of Fuquay-Varina (0-1).  The marathon opening set was an apt indicator of what was in store for the rest of this close match.   Outstanding middle hitting by Brennan O’Connor, strong serving by Gaige Cogswell, and steady setting by Lucas Siegel anchored the Cary attack.  Precision setting by Brendan Smith and power hitting and blocking from Shane Lympany led the way for the Spartans.  It should be noted that strong performances were put in by all the players on each team.  In addition, both teams had boys who were playing in their first ever power volleyball match and each of them contributed significantly to their teams’ efforts.  If this match is any indication, TBVL is in for a whole lot of exciting volleyball this season!

Sun Feb 1, 2009   FVAA vs CHAVC 3-1 (22-25  25-11  25-19  25-23)

The Spartans of Fuquay-Varina (1-1) won their first TBVL match on Sunday, defeating the CHAVC Warriors (1-1) 3 sets to 1. The Spartans served well throughout the match and had great setting from Aidan Carroll and Lucas Siegel.  Shane Lympany showed great form with many powerful spikes.  Aaron Lympany, Will Ascuitto, and Ryan Baker also helped the team to victory.  The Warriors started the match well with consistent serves from Thomas Rasmussen and Kyle Pinheiro and good ball control by all players.  The Spartans however showed more consistency throughout the match with serves, passing, and defense and ended up leaving Chapel Hill with a win.

Fri Feb 6, 2009   8:00 – 10:00pm  CHAVC vs CYBVC-2 3-0 (25-20 25-21 25-14)

With all four teams owning a loss....it looks like we will have a very competitive league.  The CYBVC-2 team obviously did not take to the late night start.  They started and/or ended games like a champion, but their eyes glazed over halfway into every set.  The Chapel Hill team got great setting again from 13 year old sensation Yize Dong and strong attacks from Adam Perry in the middle.  CYBVC-2 served well and had some great digs off of hard attacks but could not put all the pieces together to be consistent which ended in our leagues first three set event.

Sun Feb 15, 2009   3:00 – 5:00pm  CYBVC-1 vs FVAA  3-1 (25-18, 15-25, 25-19 25-19)

The CYBVC-1 Boys notched their first match for the win column with a 3-1 victory over the FVAA Spartans.  The CYBVC-1 boys utilized consistent passing, strong setting from Andrew McMurray and Aidan Carroll, dominating middle play by Tyler Malpass, and outside power hitting from Joseph Lucido to keep the Spartans at bay.  In spite of some great digs by Will Asciutto and Sean Smith, and strong net play from Shane and Aaron Lympany, the Spartans were unable to mount a sustained attack against CYBVC-1.  Our thanks to Adria Fecteau for providing expert refereeing for our match.

Sun Feb 22, 2009   3:00 – 5:00pm  CYBVC-1 vs CHAVC  3-1 (25-20,  25-19, 23-25, 25-22)

The CYBVC-1 Boys picked up their second win of the season by defeating the CHAVC Warriors 3 -1.   The CYBVC-1 boys were sharp on their serving and passing.  Aidan Carroll and Andrew McMurray were very consistent with their setting and Joseph Lucido and Tyler Malpass took care of the ball at the net with great spikes.  The Warriors had a slow start to the match but picked up their game on the third and fourth set with good hitting from Adam Perry and Kyle Pinheiro, and blocking from Caleb Newell and Jamie Mainwaring, The rest of the team contributed to the late awakening with good serves and passes, but the CYBVC-1 boys sustained their strong play and closed the match.   Our thanks to the parents who helped organize the event and referee the match.

Fri Feb 27,2009 8:00-10:00pm CYBVC-2 vs CYBVC-1  3-2 (13-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-21, 20-18)

We should have sold tickets to this match...the story line would be an Oscar Nomination for best movie.  The underdog CYBVC-2 team never gave up after a very slow start that looked like a quick night for the CYBVC-1 team only to extend the match to the TBVL's first "FIVE SET" event.

Set #1: CYBVC-2 couldn't get anything right as Joseph Lucido riped off eight straight serves along with Aidan Carroll's four serves to get a 15-3 lead. Chris Hawk and Tyler Malpass snapped off a few sharpe attacks on the way to an easy win. (25-13)
Set #2: CYBVC-2 returned the favor by Drew Alberse and Gaige Cogswell service runs and hustle by Lucas Seigel to get a quick 9-3 lead.  Steady play and hustling defense allowed CYBVC-2 to even the match at 1-1. (28-18)
Set #3: CYBVC-1 looked to return to form with big service runs by Aidan and Chris.  Smooth and steady setting by Andrew McMurray helped keep CYBVC-1 in the lead but CYBVC-2 stayed steady.  A big attack by Teny Joseph only fueled CYBVC-1 to end the match with a very deceptive setter dump by Aidan to take the match lead 2-1. (25-18)
Set #4: CYBVC-2 turned the tables again with a steady approach of getting serves in and playing strong defense.  Long and exciting rallies with bodies flying everywhere pushed by a crazy eight point service run by Amit Katyayan
and blocks by Brennan O'Connor to evened up the match 2-2 and send the match to the leagues first five game event. (25-21)
Set #5:  This back and fourth story had to end in a flurry of overtime excitement. Screams and cheers from a large group of family and friend could be heard all over the Cary YMCA. The even match-up this night was as exciting as it gets.  Both teams had multiple opportunities to end it, but nobody wanted to go home.  CYBVC-2 jumped to a quick 7-2 lead and it looked like we might be done...but no, CYBVC-1 crawled back to tie it at 10-10 with a couple of rocket spikes by Joseph.  The game went back-and-forth trading spikes, tips and rallies all the way to 18-18.  With Amit back to serve for CYBVC-2, the underdogs pulled two final times for the win.  I'm sure this story will continue at the next CYBVC match-up on April 17th. (20-18)

In the end, someone had to win...all of players, coaches, families and friend were the true winners by taking part in this match that will go down as highlight match of the season.
I'm sure this story will continue at the next CYBVC match-up on April 17th.

Our thanks to Great Officiating Crew of Brian Jones,
Dave and Jamie Buning, Bonnie O'Connor, Ariana and Pam Lucido.   We deeply appreciate you giving your time and help with our boys volleyball league.  One last thank-you to the Cary YMCA "Manager on Duty" -  George Wait who not only allowed us to stay and finish after 10:30pm (the Cary Y officially closes at 10pm) but watched and cheered or boys too.  Thanks George.

Fri Mar 6,2009   8:00 – 10:00pm  FVAA vs CYBVC-2  3-1 (25-16,  25-15, 12-25, 25-22)

With all four teams have even match records at 2-2....and stranger yet, no home team has won a match so far this season.  The FVAA team jumped to a quick two set lead on strong serving by Brendan Smith and thundering spikes by Shane Lympany and Joseph Lucido. CYBVC-2 got back into set three with an eight point serving run by Teny Joseph  and had some great digs off of hard attacks to get back into the match later but could not put all the pieces together to be get to set five. Our thanks to the solid CYBVC-1 Officials Aidan Carroll, Tyler Green and Andrew McMurray, the scorekeeping crew of Taylor Siegel and Arianna Lucido and Line-judge work of Jim Frey who sacrificed "date-night" with his wife to volunteer.

Sun Mar 15,2009   3pm – 5pm  CHAVC vs FVAA    0-3 ( 21-25,  22-25,  21-25 )

The first TBVL home victory was scored by the FVAA Spartans in a well-played match in Fuquay-Varina's historic Council Gym.  The match was marked by several long rallies with plenty of strong attacks and outstanding defensive plays on both sides.  The CHAVC Warriors were led by Kyle Pinheiro's serving and hitting, Yize Dong's excellent setting and strong service runs, Adam Perry's middle hitting, and Thomas Rasmussen's overall solid and smart play throughout the afternoon.  The Warriors jumped out to an early lead in all three sets, but struggled to maintain the momentum to finish off the Spartans. The FVAA team (with help from Joseph Lucido filling in for injured Shane Lympany) had solid performances by Brendan Smith with solid setting and several well-placed dumps, Aaron Lympany's blocking, and some great front row and back row attacking by Joseph Lucido.  Ryan Baker made several rally saving digs and newcomer Ben Terry handled service receives as if he'd been playing for several years.

Sun Mar 22,2009   3pm – 5pm  CYBVC-2 vs CHAVC  0-3 (24-26, 14-25, 19-25)

The CHAVC Warriors completed their regular TBVL season with a win over CYBVC-2.  The Warriors played a balanced match with all players contributing to the win.  Kyle Pinheiro and Thomas Rasmussen worked well in their new position as setters. Jamie Mainwaring took advantage of short sets in the middle to display his powerful spikes.  Kyle and Thomas also contributed to the offense with good hits.  Andrew Dowry and Eric Lang provide great ball reception and defense, and Caleb Newell, Jamie, Eric, and Kyle protected the net with great blocks.  The CYBVC-2 boys played a great first set, with great serves from Gaige Cogswell and Amit Katyayan, steady setting from Lucas Siegel, and strong all-around play from Jake Frye and Brennan O’Connor. The first set was very close and could have gone either way. However, after loosing the first set, CYBVC-2 was unable to maintain the level of play they had displayed in the first set.  All the boys competed well!  Our thanks to Aidan Carroll and Bonnie O'Connor for officiating the match.

Fri Apr 3,2009   7:00pm – 10:00pm  FVAA vs CYBVC-1 3-1 (20-25, 13-25, 27-25, 18-25)

With by far their best team effort of the season, CYBVC-1 managed their first home victory, 3-1 over the FVAA Spartans.  In the first set, CYBVC-1 prevailed 25-20 with excellent all around play , highlighted by a strong serve-receive,  despite nice serving runs by Aaron Lympany and Ben Terry.  In the Set 2, CYBVC-1 used steady, experienced play to capitalize on service errors, winning, 25-13.  In Set 3, the Spartans coupled scrappy play with six service points from Ryan Baker to win the hard-fought set, 27-25 .  CYBVC-1 bounced back in the fourth set to end the match, 25-18 . Chris Hawk for CYBVC-1 and Brendan Smith for the Spartans showed outstanding all-round play throughout the match. Extra-special thanks to Taylor Siegel for a terrific job scorekeeping.

Fri Apr 17,2009 7:00 - 10:00pm CYBVC-1 vs CYBVC-2  3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 17-25, 26-24, 17-15)

We’ll keep this brief because it will be old news tomorrow when the TBVL Championships begin. CYBVC-1 takes the final match of the regular season: 20-25, 25-20, 17-25, 26-24, and 17-15. The competition was every bit as close as when these two teams met in February, this time with CYBVC-2 even outscoring
CYBVC-1 over the course of the match. One of the many highlights included CYBVC-2's Set 5 comeback from 14-10, led by Jake Frye’s hard serving, to take the lead in the fifth set, 15-14, before CYBVC-1 closed it out 17-15. There was excellent hitting from Amit Katyayan, Brennan O’Connor, Tyler Malpass and Joseph Lucido; excellent setting from Aidan Carroll, Andrew McMurray, and Lucas Siegel; and superb all-around play from Gaige Cogswell and Chris Hawk. Thanks to Stephen Buning, Brian Magee, and Jim Frye for their help with the reffing and scorekeeping.
