Most of you have heard the sad news that the four year old Uga VII, our 56-pound mascot nicknamed "Loran's Best," passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack yesterday. He compiled a record of 16-7 during his two year tenure, the shortest in the Uga linage. There will not be a live mascot this weekend, but there will be a wreath on Uga's dog house in his honor. For more details, visit http://www.alumni.uga.edu/alumni/.
The “Dawgs Feeding Dawgs Campaign” is a wonderful way to celebrate Uga’s life and his service to Georgia. We have 2 remaining games (Kentucky & Ga Tech) in which we would like to encourage everyone to bring @ least 1 bag of dog food to donate to this community service project in honor of Uga. Our chapter will then give back to our community by donating all dog food collected to our local SPCA. We look forward to seeing everyone @ Sammy's and having you participate in this campaign with us.
GO DAWGS!!!!! |

HISTORY CORNER – For UGA’s 225th Anniversary
In 1858 UGA commissioned Athens Foundry to build a new wrought- iron gate and fence to replace the battered wood fence that surrounded the campus. The money for the project was raised by selling UGA’s original botanical gardens, located west of the campus.
The Arch was patterned after the one on Georgia ’s Great Seal. The Arch itself represents the state constitution, and the three columns supporting it represent wisdom, justice, and moderation.
Originally, the Arch held heavy gates that were closed to secure the campus, but they disappeared sometime around 1885.
In 1946, two electric lights were added to the top of the Arch, and it was moved about six feet away from the street.
History points to UGA alumnus, Daniel Huntley Redfearn (Class of 1910), as the originator of the legend that if you walk under the Arch while you are a freshman, you will never graduate.

The game will be on @ Sammy's this Saturday @ 3:30pm. Please look for the tables that will be reserved for our chapter. Go DAWGS!!!
P.S. To get you pumped up for the game....see the comment from Coach Richt below:
"It's an exciting time. You can feel the fall in the air. It's cooling down and becoming football weather. We have a big SEC clash this weekend at 3:30 with the nationally televised CBS game. I want to encourage all our fans to get jacked up and ready to go. I want the Dog Walk to be wild. I want the students to be crazed as always and make the pregame warmups an exciting time and get it the stands as fast as you can because it's going to be a special day for college football. It's the kind of game that everybody dreams of growing up. If a kid wants to play college ball, he watches SEC football and dreams about games like these. We're excited to be in a game that has the magnitude that is does........ .....
"We're 3-1. We put ourselves in position to be in this game this weekend and have it be very meaningful and that's really what you want at this point. Have we peaked? No way. There's no way this team has peaked. Will we peak is the questions? Will we become solid enough and consistent enough to be able to win a game like this. Time is going to tell. A very short amount of time will tell. What we've done in the past is the past. We have put ourselves in position to be undefeated in SEC play. Playing a team that is ranked No. 4 in the country at our house, we have a chance to see what we are all about." |

UGA HISTORY CORNER – For UGA's 225th Anniversary
Dr. Charles Herty was the father of football at Georgia . After graduating from Georgia he studied at Johns Hopkins University . He returned to Athens as a chemistry professor and introduced the game to students. Herty initiated the formation of a team by helping the students prepare a field of play, or 'gridiron'. He arranged for the first game ever played in the deep South: Georgia vs. Mercer, Jan. 30, 1892. He and his old Johns Hopkins classmate, Dr. George Petrie of the Auburn University History Department, arranged for a game between Georgia and Auburn , Feb. 20, 1892, which the Tigers won, 10-0. That historic game inaugurated the South's oldest football rivalry.
Mark Richt is the 24th Head Coach for the Georgia football team.
In the past 10 years, 52 Georgia players have been chosen in the annual NFL Draft. Georgia is currently one of the country's top five producers of NFL players.
UGA Seeks Community Cooperation to Manage Game Day Trash
"If you bring it in, please take it out." That's the mantra the University of Georgia is asking its football fans to adopt in an effort to control the amount of trash littering campus on a football Saturday. And if they can't take it out, at least bag it and place it in a trash receptacle or dumpster.
"I believe the students, alumni and fans who attend UGA football games do love and respect this beautiful campus," said UGA President Michael F. Adams. "And I fully expect that they will do their part to clean up after themselves and to ensure that others around them do the same."
The university plans to distribute 12,000 trash bags in parking lots and around campus this Saturday before the Georgia Bulldogs play host to the Arizona State Sun Devils in a 7 p.m. kickoff. Volunteers from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes will walk through tailgating areas distributing trash bags and encouraging tailgaters to bag their trash and deposit it in an appropriate receptacle. The number of disposable trash boxes on North Campus will be increased to 400 from the previous 250, and over the entire campus to 1,500 from the previous 1,200. Several large roll-off dumpsters will be placed strategically around campus for tailgaters to dispose of their bagged trash.
Additionally, the firm that contracts to clean the campus on Sundays following a football game – American Stadium Services – will send crews on an initial sweep through North Campus during the first quarter of remaining games this season to pick up trash already collected and set aside by tailgaters.
The number of Port-a-Johns available on campus also will be increased, particularly in the North Campus area which has been problematic.
"Before people head to the game for kickoff, we hope they'll pick up around their tailgate area, bag the trash, and either place it in their vehicle to carry home or place it in one of our trash receptacles or dumpsters," said George Stafford, associate vice president for auxiliary and administrative services, who oversees game day operations outside Sanford Stadium itself. Fans should encourage those around them to do the same, he added. "It will take the community working together to accomplish this," he said. "People who profess to care about UGA should help take care of UGA."
Sincerely,
Jenn & Stacey
