Project Lifesaver is a rapid-response program aiding victims, and their families, suffering from Alzheimer's disease and related disorders such as dementia, as well as autism and learning disabilities. Project Lifesaver uses state-of-the-art technology and specially-trained officers to locate individuals who have wandered away and cannot take care of themselves.
- People protected by Project Lifesaver are required to wear a personalized bracelet that emits a tracking signal. The tracking bracelet emits and automatic signal every second 24 hours a day. When caregivers notify the local Project Lifesaver Sheriff's Office that the person is missing, a serach and rescue team responds to the wanderer's area and starts searching with the mobile locator tracking system. This enables trained rescue personnel to locate the subjects in minutes instead of hours.
- Project Lifesaver has experienced a 100% success rate. Every person lost has been located, with no serious injuries of deaths. The average rescue time after arriving at the scene is 22 minutes.
- There are approximately 101,000 individuals living in the Commonwealth of Virginia with Alzheimer's disease, making this a very important program.
- The Orange County Sheriff's Office provides radio-operated wrist transmitters to citizens residing in the County that meet the criteria for obtaining one. Participants must understand that the transmitter is to be returned to the Sheriff's Office once the bracelet is no longer needed.
- Project Lifesaver is a partnership between the Orange County Sheriff's Office, the Town of Orange Police Department, the Town of Gordonsville Police Department, and TRIAD.
- Donations are needed to purchase additional bracelets for Alzheimer's patients and other vulnerable citizens. Each bracelet costs approximately $300.00, and batteries need to be maintained monthly at a cost of $20.00. Any donation towards this program would be appreciated.
