John's Trek for Tibet 2007

Trek for Tibet

This site is about my big trip for 2007 - the 'Trek for Tibet' fund raiser for the Australia Tibet Council (ATC). I couldn't decide whether to have a website or a blog, so ended up with both. This is where I talk about the trip itself, and put it in a bit of context. The blog will be about my experiences during the trip, and no doubt show some of the inevitable photos!

The photo at left is of course His Holiness the Dalai Lama - one of the most recognisable people on the planet, and spiritual leader of the Tibetan people.

The reason I'm doing the trek is to raise funds for ATC in their ongoing campaign to raise awareness of the plight of the Tibetan people, and naturally I also want to visit the spectacular north of India, a country I've wanted to visit since I left school. The trek will be in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India, starting and finishing in Dharamsala, home of His Holiness.

It's been very sad for me to see what the Chinese have done to Tibet and its people, with the acquiescence of the vast majority of Western political leaders, but amazing to see the seemingly unbounded gentle patience of His Holiness.

Photos

Hopefully there'll be lots of photos, and Google has this great new facility to include a Google Maps reference for where the photo was taken. Let's see if I can work that one out!

This photo is from the World Expeditions site, and taken in the Laka Got area, where I'll be on September 29th.

The Preparations

Though the treks themselves don't sound too hard, finishing most days by early afternoon, I know that at higher altitudes the available oxygen is less, so the body will be working harder to just do the normal everyday stuff.

I've been walking lots, cycling, climbing stairs - I can't remember when I last took the lift at work unless I'm carrying a couple of cups of coffee from the café - so I walk up those ten flights of stairs (five floors) at least 2-3 times a day. And I haven't bought a new car since my old one died earlier this year, so I've been forced to walk and cycle even more than I would have otherwise.

Itinerary

I leave Brisbane Saturday 22nd September 2345 hrs on Singapore Airlines - I like getting to the airport VERY early, to avoid the possibility of traffic jams, accidents... and they're great places to people watch ... and I just enjoy that anticipation before a trip too, so I'll be there a good few hours beforehand.

Here's the detailed itinerary

And here's the international air part of the itinerary if you're interested - have had to move things around to prevent glitches Itinerary.

Fund Raising

I'm raising over $2000 for the Australia Tibet Council as my contribution to their cause; the cost of the trip is quite separate and of course I'm paying for that totally myself. Inspired Adventures are the people who organise this side of things.
