Scope:
This subcommittee will focus on measures to reduce the risk of vehicle intrusions into work spaces and other potentially hazardous areas in highway work zones. Its efforts will include identification of issues, documentation of research needs, review of research results, and fostering research implementation pertaining to the provision of positive protection in highway work zones. Specific areas of concern will include relationships between motorist and worker safety, design and performance of positive protection systems (barriers, impact attenuators, and other hardware) and implementation criteria for the use of positive protection, as well as other methods and techniques to reduce the risk of intrusions where the use of positive protection is not practical or feasible. A related concern will be the effects of positive protection on construction quality, productivity, and cost.
