About the Section
Maintenance and Preservation Section of TRB includes 15 Standing Committees and three Subcommittees. The Committees are concerned with all aspects highway maintenance and preservation; activities that are meant to provide a cost-effective lifecycle for highway infrastructure and safe driving conditions for the travelling public. The scope of interests includes pavements and related materials, bridges, weather and traffic-related operations, personnel, operations management, equipment and roadsides.
The Section is part of the Operations and Preservation Group. The Group is concerned with safe and efficient movement of traffic under all weather and operational conditions, and comprises three Sections; Maintenance and Preservation, Operations and Traffic Management, and Security and Emergencies.
The Maintenance and Preservation Standing Committees sponsor a variety of activities through the year to identify current and future challenges, to develop and promote research activities and innovative approaches to address the challenges, and to promote the communication and implementation of findings to improve highway management practices. Typical activities include workshops, webinars, technical conferences and on-line communication groups. All of the Committees host meetings and technical sessions at the Transportation Research Board’s Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.
The Subcommittees are concerned with promoting research and communications, and organizational renewal within the Section and the Group, to enhance Section activities within and outside the TRB community.
Members and Officers of the Standing Committees volunteer their time to participate in TRB. They are invited from the public and private sector and academia, from near and far, to provide diverse and innovative perspectives on critical issues facing highway maintenance and preservation. I value their contributions and thank them for their commitment.
