Buy an article and building instructions, for my Extreme Skate Sail for ice and land - Top speed 75 mph, 120 km/h.

Sailor is inside the wing, no extra air drag! Probably the worlds fastest skate sail.

I was, as far as I know the first to show that this was much faster than the previous skate sail, where the sailor stands on the leeward side of a single cloth sail. I am the designer of this contraption.

1. Master the art of Packing Light and Compact!

Go from suitcase to carry-on or to all in the pockets! Save $$$, time, sweat, hassle - and the planet.

Packing Light is a bit old hat. Nomads have been concerned about the weight of their gear at least since Homo Habilis, 2 million years ago. Time for Compactness?

Searching "how to pack light" gave 190 000 hits with Google. "how to pack compact" gave no relevant hit. (July 2010)

Also useful for the day trip on foot in nature/town.

If this is the kick in the pants you need to pack lighter it is money well spent.

You can shrink your luggage to iPod Nano seize.

Weight some 1 oz, 30 g.

Lightest item .0014 oz, .04 g!

A fully functional....

As you see everything you can possibly need is there: e g toothbrush head (combines with...), lock and wire for hotel cupboard, nail tool, shaver, medicines, thermometer and a bit more.

My definition of luggage: "That's what I take with me when I check out of the hotel."

Inner dimensions of case: 3.5 x 1.6 x 0.27 inches, 8.9 x 4.1 x .7 cm.

Volume .85 fl oz, 26 ml.

I was contacted by a man going minimalistic

He mentioned the 100 things Challenge which I didn't know about. It has some in common with traveling with little gear. A difference is that a traveler can rely on the facilities at the accommodation:

A room *. A bed. Toilette. Light **. Facility for washing yourself and you clothes. Soap. Towel. I think those are the 7 essentials.

My total travel gear, including clothes and footwear, consists of from 24 items.

Ad five and I am at from 31 items when traveling.

* Or a tent - I have been sleeping in "hotel" tents a couple of times.

** The most basic was at the world class beach on Boracay, Philippines. My landlady brought a lit kerosene lamp to my bungalow when it got dark.

    • Nano Luggage, 1 oz, 30 grams is enough! Miniaturize what you need. Goes in the shirt pocket! I don't suggest you go that far. It looked possible so I tried. But with little sacrifice in functions you can pack much, much lighter. Thinking outside the "only a carry-on bag"? What to buy, how to modify etc. More

  • Manage without more than 100 items common:

        • in luggage. From towel to nail trimmer - not to mention the backpack/suitcase. Some 53 are from a suggested medical kit in one of the planet's favorite back packer's guide.

        • when walking around town. From day pack to wallet.

    • If you are not into packing light these techniques enables you to ad many nice items, functions, to your gear. Just as an example, I can add 34 light long sleeve shirts and still stay below 11 lbs, 5 kg! You may save $ US 1000 on gear you don't need to buy. More

  • Find/make small varieties of what you carry around town, 10 oz, 280 g enough! The some 14 items I carry, travel guide, camera, sun glasses, wrist watch etc. are mostly compact and weigh 10 oz, 280 g. (Wind breaker, "always" in a pocket, not included.) Volume is 12 fl oz, 336 ml. All in the pockets - no day pack. More

  • Features of Light Compact Warm Clothes that are efficient with respect to their volume. A bargain if it stops you from spending US $ 30 - 100 on e.g. an inefficient wind breaker. They go into the pockets of the Super Cool Dress. And I am prepared for temperatures from very hot to freezing! One Holy Grail of Travel Light? Also makeshift solutions - instead of "bringing a sweater just in case". When buying or ordering e.g. a windbreaker there are some 14 features for warmth and compactness to look for. How many can you suggest? More

  • How to get a really compact point and shoot camera travel gear. Applies also a bit to phones etc. Two important steps. A bargain if you get rid of 75% weight/volume as I did. A site gives free help but misses one very, very important point, let alone unorthodox methods I present. More

      • Eco-friendly and a Eco Solution as less resources are needed for manufacturing, transporting and disposal of luggage.

Mentally approach the luggage selection problem from the light, minimalistic, end?

Start with a basic luggage something like below. Then adding an item from my How to Manage Without list, e g a shampoo bottle, may seem ridiculous.

Have bra? Keep your luggage there! Cleavage Luggage! :)

A friend borrowed me this photo. My first reaction was, ah that is great, ladies don't need a toilet case.

The background was that my friend, on the road, had given his local temporary girlfriend a toothbrush, coconut oil for the hair and toothpaste.

She put it in the bra. He gave her a plastic bag. But she didn't take it.

If he got it right, there were some language difficulties, she wanted to bring these goodies discretely into her home. Or else mama would say "I haven't had a new toothbrush for years!" And the small sister would claim the hair coconut oil. And....

One way to reduce luggage is to combine several functions in one item.

Is this one practical? I am not sure. Maybe the lady wants to wear her bra at the same time as she needs a bag. Bra folds into night cap I think is more practical.

I think my combination are a bit more practical.

Photo. This is how my wallet looks like when it is empty. Picture not missing, that's the way it looks! Zero weight and volume!

2. Mastering the art of Heat Relief? Test below.

20 new ways* to beat the heat with science! At a couple of cents a day it is a bargain if you sometimes are uncomfortable in hot weather.

Don't add to the Fatality Stories! Don't get caught in the wrong hot spot without the gear and knowledge.

Heat Emergency Test!

It is 108 F, 42 C, under the clear sky near the equator at midday - it doesn't get much worse.

The action time in comfort, after leaving good AC, is, I say, a mere 10 minutes.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, USA, an agency of the Department of Homeland Security, have guidelines for: During a Heat Emergency: "Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible. Protect face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat."

Had I only practiced that I might have given up visiting the tropics because of discomfort or I could be dead by heat stroke.

Further they write: "- is based on the most reliable..... information available .... including advances in scientific knowledge... "

Is it possible for a non Rocket Scientist to add something to their guidelines regarding dress?

My suggestions takes you 20 cooling steps further. Some are techniques.

Maybe my Master of Science in Applied Physics helped a bit to improve on FEMA'S guidelines.

  • A Super Cool (Travel) Dress for hot weather. Soon a "must have" except for Mount Everest? For travel, home or heatwaves. At least 12 important features to look for when buying or ordering from a tailor. Do you know them? (Tailors are inexpensive in inexpensive countries.) More.

  • An Super Cool/UV Umbrella is cooler and a much better UV radiation stopper than the average. An Effective Hand Fan and Techniques that keep you cooler. More.

A (travel) dress with many novel ideas for comfort in hot weather

It has some 12 important features, can be applied to skirts also - how many can you suggest? Good to know when shopping or ordering from a tailor.

I have over twenty in my reports!

Some are divided in several steps (which each gives a noticeable difference) like: "Wear short sleeve shirt." "Wear ...... shirt."

For what you can't see, e.g. socks, assume the worst case in the circumstances. So don't assume Long johns.

Each suggestion is worth about 0.8 degree F, or 0.4 degree C, drop in perceived temperature.

E.g. 6 suggestions=5 F, 3 C.

10 suggestions=8 F, 4 C.

20 suggestions=16 F, 8 C.

My suggestions are sustainable techniques. It is not about some gadgets you have to regenerate in a freezer now and then.

Hopefully the suggestions will make hot places like the tropicts more accessible for more people.

How many outfit suggestions do you have for better temperature comfort?

* I am using FEMA's guidelines as the benchmark.

No, not really. I bought it and it is meant as a gift to the monastery.

It was really hot. I desperately needed a big fan. I couldn't find one so I took a small one and stapled on some $ 500 in $ 10 bills. Expensive fan? No it was local dollars so it came to less than a US$ 1.

When it gets really hot a mesh shirt keeps you much cooler.

"A comfort collection for the hot catwalk of life"

Eco-friendly Eco solution

Less sweating means less showering and washing of clothes. Less need for air conditioning or electric fans. Less weight of clothes, typically half, means considerably less resources are needed for manufacturing, transport, washing and disposal.

3. 22 miscellaneous Tips and Tricks

If you are an average traveler they are a bargain as a couple of the tips may ward off pickpocket attacks.

The Universal Shoe Sole. More, inlc. pictures. A common sole for all your traveling shoes. I saved about 1 pound, 450 g, and plenty of volume, on two pair of shoes.

Do It Yourself instructions describes how to make the soles easily detachable from the shoes. Eco-friendly/solution if applied on an industrial scale

E.g. Makeshift Door knob alarm, make in 1 minute from what is available in most hotel rooms. Basic Do It Yourself, DIY, pick pocket guard - most travelers don't have it??? Razor blade artist pocket guard, even makeshift. A .1oz, 3 g, substitute for the electric racket mosquito killer (enormous amounts of material etc are unnecessarily going into manufacturing that electric variety), great in malaria areas. Wash and dry in 1 hour, even without electricity. A 1 oz, 30 g, addition to .... makes it a good rain protector for hot climates. More

Spray on clothes

Long nose hair grows overnight

There is work going on in this field and it can possibly be something for Ultra Compact Travel.

Imagine you feel cold. You take out your little spray can and spray on a warm foam vest.

Development is at the moment hampered by too much shrinkage when garment dries and there are reports of buttons popping. :-)

In the meantime I suggest you use the tips in my Travel light & Compact reports - buy above.

It is commonly known that you can get gray hair overnight. Less well known is that you can grew inch long nose and ear hair in a day. See photo above ! :)

Left in photo is an electric nose and ear hair trimmer. It is large by my standards - about as big as my basic luggage. Another "too big" alternative are nose hair scissors.

I describe in my reports how I manage without either of those.

The reports are crammed with tips, techniques and tactics that work for most people.

I have traveled thousands of miles, some four around the world trips (I have lost count) - most of the time with less than 10 pounds, 4.5 kg, of luggage.

Fancy camera or slim point-and-shot?

I give several reasons for not bringing a SLR camera. I also explain how to achieve a very compact camera travel kit.

The people above said they couldn't get pictures of the flying birds.

Here is my point-and-shoot photo of the sea birds

When it got darker I used the flash to in effect get the otherwise too long exposure time down. Before a shoot I focused on a spot some 3 yards, 3 m, away on the ground as the camera's auto focus of course could not handle these fast moving creatures.

Years on the mostly hot roads in some 60 countries has taught me that packing minimalism can be an art - or more recently, a sport.

If you are a business traveler still spending time waiting for checked air line luggage this may be the information and the kick in the pants you need.

"I pack light. Everything we need is right here in my pants." says Leslie Nielsen to a lady in the movie Wrongfully accused, 1998.

The focus is on my travel style and destinations

I stay in inexpensive hotels, eat in restaurants and travel the longer stretches by air.I am mostly in the tropics. - Back pack travel without the back pack. Some tips may be useful for hikers etc. too.

A have no (expensive) brand clothing/gear.

Give your luggage US$ xx haircut!

On the spokes of this bicycle I fitted turbine blades. The front wheel is here rotating in the wind.

With a relative wind from the side the turbines create a direct driving force - no loss in gears.

As the area of the turbines is quite small you need a strong wind to get the bicycle moving under wind power alone.

With a very strong relative wind of 32 knots, 16 m/s, the power developed is about one horse power. That should be enough to propel you at some 25 MPH, 40 km/h.

If you live in a very windy place it can be a feasible mode of green transportation.

I have been to the Cape Horn area, southern tip of South America. It is windy there. Wikipedia: "with squalls of over 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph)" - 54 knots, 27 m/s, occurring in all seasons.

That should give you nice burst of speed!

For performance in lighter wind a bicycle with oversize wheels can be designed.

Maybe you know the story: You are allowed 88 pounds, 40 kg, check in luggage. You manage to sneak 30 pounds, 14 kg, on board as carry-on. On the road you find some inexpensive things you can't refuse to buy. You may end up like this: You need a "side car" to move your stuff. It is very ECO-friendly as it runs on water and rice.

I hauled three papers from my shirt pocket. My Friend: You call this traveling light?

I had traveled to see a friend on the other side of the planet (with 10 pounds, 4.5 kg, of luggage, it was a temperate place and I was carrying some things to my home which was my next stop. One day I hauled out three letter sized papers from my shirt pocket. It was printouts of the most useful worlds and phrases in the local language and I used the empty space for notes.

My friend said: And you are supposed to travel light?

The printouts I had hastily made, before the flights, to study on the planes, from internet and only printed on one side of the papers. Next time, to avoid such embarrassing situations, I must take my time and edit it down to one sheet of paper.

Learn now the Tips, Tricks and Techniques of Ultra Light, Compact, Cool, Warm (travel) gear, and more!

More and more airlines charge for check in luggage. Will back packers become "carry on bag only" travelers?

Airlines eliminates free snacks and ups food charges. For "one bag only" travelers nice to have room for something to eat and drink. Bring the liquid in 3 oz, 100 ml, bottles - or as cucumbers?

You are probably spending thousands of dollars on your vacation trips. Spend a fraction more and enjoy more pleasant travels in the future. Many of the tips can also be useful when not traveling - especially those about cool dress, special umbrella and an efficient hand fan for hot weather.

You can save: Hundreds of Dollars, Sweat, Hassle, Time - and the Planet!

Even if you are not yet longing for iPod Nano size luggage you probably still find plenty of useful information.

Altogether hundreds of suggestions, specifications, how to do and how to make steps, skills, techniques, etc.

Are you a business traveler? Or you do you value your holiday time?

From PeterCochrane's Blog , he travels with carry-on only, he recounts when he traveled with a colleague who had checked luggage:

...and a long wait at baggage claim. So when we got to the taxi rank there was always a long line. When I am on my own I'm through an airport like a knife through butter - no waiting in line, no bag loss, no baggage claim and mostly no taxi delays. All told I reckon we lost about a full working day by this mechanism alone!

Any check in luggage Sir? No I have it all here in the pocket. - It's just a 3 months tour to the tropics.

I am aiming at:

Not looking stuffed with all gear in my pockets. If some need arises (especially if temporary) e. g. more body insulation or shielding from the sun I first try to use something freely and or easily available.

That's more sport than buying!

Straw men

I saw some pictures of men wearing big dresses stuffed with straw - they looked stuffed! In Evelene or something like that in Switzerland?

If I find them again I will put a picture here.

Traveling is fun - testing limits and developing gear and techniques at the same time makes it more fun

I have mostly been traveling light, around 4.5 kg, 10 lbs, with a small bag. It's a challenge to minimize your needs. From a light bag I went to all luggage in a multi pocket vest, then to all in the pockets without the vest. Then to luggage in a match box. Next the luggage into an iPod Nano case. Actually more volume but requiring slimmer luggage components. It is probably not the end of it. Some of my travel friends call me "Travel Light".

A comments from a traveler: "My toothpaste probably weighs more than your luggage."

I the shop I saw a dental floss package. I could fit luggage for two in there.

This is a small area wing sail and should therefore be able to reach higher speeds before you are over powered.

With this wing over powering should come around 100 mph, 160 km/h.
