Dr. Lin Fraser has an EdD in Counseling Psychology from the University of San Francisco, an M.A. in Counseling from San Francisco State and a B.A. in Psychology from Duke. She is licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California (MFT8288) and is certified as a National Certified Counselor (NCC17402). She is also certified as a Distance Certified Counselor (DCC553) and is trained in online therapy. She has been in private practice in the same location in San Francisco for over 30 years. In addition to her general psychotherapy practice, she has developed an international reputation as a leading expert in transgender identity issues. She currently serves on the Board of Directors as well as the Standards of Care (SOC) Task Force for WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) focusing on adult psychotherapy and web-based care. She is co-editor of the association newsletter and is also on the editorial board of the International Journal of Transgenderism. Dr. Fraser offers workshops, corporate training, and academic classes in her area of expertise. She is also available as an expert witness or consultant to attorneys in transgender law. Drawn to the transgender population for their courage, their insistence on authenticity despite profound stigma, and their ability and desire to engage in deeply meaningful therapeutic work, she has remained fascinated and rewarded by working with this community for over 30 years. She appreciates the opportunity and challenge of helping people along this sometimes very difficult path. She also enjoys the opportunity and challenge of developing, synthesizing and presenting new and integrated theory based on clinical experience and trans narratives. She has seen hundreds of people of varying ages, age of onset of transgender feelings and degree of dysphoria and has seen multiple outcomes along the gender spectrum. She especially enjoys doing long-term depth psychotherapy and sometimes sees people for many years. She has found that the Jungian approach, with its comfort with mystery and complexity and its focus on meaning and individuation, provides a good holding environment for the deeply challenging situations transgender people face. In the final analysis, she's in agreement with the 2001 SOC, that the ‘overarching treatment goal is lasting personal comfort with the gendered self in order to maximize psychological well-being and self-fulfillment”. She has written and presented widely on the subject and looks forward to meeting and training clinicians in Bakersfield on February 27th.
