This site provides information about the upcoming February 27, 2009 training in Bakersfield, California on Gender Variant and Transgender Identities: Clinical and Ethical Issues. Your trainer will be Dr. Lin Fraser of San Francisco and the training will be from 9AM-4:30 PM with an hour for lunch and breaks in the morning and afternoon. The workshop is geared toward relatively experienced clinicians who may have little knowledge in terms of exposure or experience working with gender-variant individuals. Dr. Fraser offers an eclectic perspective and will gear the training toward the needs of the participants and will offer more advanced depth oriented case material in the afternoon. The learning objectives for the workshop include: - an understanding of sometimes confusing terminology such as sex, gender and sexual orientation and their interrelationship to the range of gender identities, including several paradigms of transgender identities, the binary/spectrum and fluid/stable paradigms and the language of gender. Exactly what does it mean to be male/female/man/woman or in-between, transsexual, transgender, crossdresser or "third" , can gender change and who decides?
- knowledge of who comes to the clinicians' practice and what they need from the therapist, ranging from basic support, referral for medical interventions and help with coming out, to complex and long-term reconstructive psychotherapy
- an understanding of what happens physically and emotionally when a person "transitions" from male to female or female-to-male or somewhere "in-between", the "coming out" process and clients relationships to their bodies, families, jobs and how these may change over time
- an understanding of WPATH's (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) International Standards of Care (SOC), how to use them, the ethical and clinical issues involved, the dual role of provider as both clinician and gatekeeper; knowledge of eligibility, readiness and risks involved for medical interventions of hormones and surgery
- a theoretical understanding of a psychodynamic model of transgender identity development, including specific critical psychological junctures and vulnerabilities and how to address them in treatment
- a brief overview of working with families, employers and other providers
This interactive, multimedia workshop will be both didactic and experiential and will include a guest speaker who is herself transgendered. It will also include selections from documentary and narrative video that illustrate clinical issues and ideas presented in the workshop. Extensive case material including client art, poetry and dreams will be presented. Class participation is encouraged for maximum benefit. |
