Justice and Peace

The Gospels teach us to love one another. One way we can do that is by actively helping to address issues of Justice and Peace

'Catholic Social Teaching'
"It promotes a vision of a just society that is grounded in the Bible and in the wisdom gathered from experience by the Christian community as it has responded to social justice issues through history."  From Australian Catholic Social Justice Council

"Work for social justice is essentially about respecting human dignity and promoting the common good. We are not just isolated individuals. We live in a network of relationships – with ourselves, others, creation, and God. We have a responsibility to care for each other and so we should work towards a society which ensures that every person and every group is able to meet their needs, and to realize their potential."

"I wish to make an urgent appeal to the People of God:
let every Christian be committed to tireless peace-making
and strenuous defence of the dignity of the human person
and his inalienable rights."
Pope Benedict XVI

There are four fundamental principles at the heart of Catholic Social Teaching.

They are interrelated and there are other principles derived from them. They are:

  • Human dignity,
  • The common good,
  • Subsidiarity,
  • Solidarity.

A website that explains Catholic Social Teaching in simple terms is “Faith Doing Justice”, an Australian website produced by the Jesuits. The 4 key principles are explained there.    Read it here.....

A website that provides a lot more detailed information and expands the 4 key principals into 10 areas, is provided by 'The Office of Social Justice' in USA. The 10 principles discussed are:

  • Human Dignity
  • Community and the Common Good
  • Option for the Poor
  • Rights and Responsibilities
  • Government and Subsidiarity
  • Economic Justice
  • Stewardship of Creation
  • Promotion of Peace
  • Participation
  • Solidarity

Sometimes Catholics complain that they do not  receive enough guidance regarding Social Justice issues. If we rely only on the public media we will not receive much help.
One helpful resource is the monthly email briefing provided by the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council. It is free and available here....
