Although rich in musical tradition, Alleghany County, NC, has remained relatively out of the spotlight compared to surrounding counties such as Surry and Grayson County, VA. The earliest generations of recorded fiddlers might best be included with the "Old Galax" sound as reflected by Virginia fiddlers like Emmett Lundy, John Rector, and Luther Davis. From Alleghany, Hus Caudill would certainly be considered part of this group. Later in the 1950's-1960's, there developed a new sound full of energy, combining traditional music with new bluegrass influences. Alleghany Fiddler Howard Joines captures this energetic spirit well. All in all, Alleghany's music history is rich, vibrant, and still alive today; it should not be overlooked by anyone who loves good music.
