 Free Mid Winter Play Day

The Mid Winter Play Day was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who showed up to make it great -- especially the devoted volunteers.

See some video clips from the event from the Sights and Sounds link on the menu at the left.

Grateful thanks to Wendy Lanxner, her guitar students and flute players, who were amazing in our auditorium.

John Love did a superb job with laughing yoga.

And all this was made possible by our sponsors, the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Food Coop, and Community Printing.  Please remember to thank them the next time you visit their stores.

The City of Takoma Park Recreation Department was our stalwart partner in this event.

Think about what you can do to help out at our September, 2012, Play Day.

Creation of Playful Bench by Sculptor Jim Calder

Have you ever noticed the totem pole and fish sculptures at the corner of Holly Ave and Tulip Ave in Old Town TP? Sculptor Jim Calder has used his whimsical skills to create a playful, interactive bench which we'll donate to the city and erect in Belle Ziegler Park.

Come see the bench at the corner of Tulip Ave and Holly Ave in Takoma Park (driveway off Tulip). Jim will be with us at our Play Day on September 24th to show kids how to carve wizards, gnomes and other creatures out of sweet potatoes!

Bench being carved

The Takoma Foundation has given us a generous grant to partially fund this project, but we seek donations for the rest. If you'd like to help, please send a check to:

Takoma Park, MD 20912

We are also selling Jim's book, "So You Thought You Couldn't Cut It: A Beginner's Guide to Woodcarving," for $21.  All proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the Young Voices Foundation, which mentors young writers. People who purchase a book can enter a raffle with the chance to win one of Jim's wood carvings.

Takoma Plays had a table and a wonderful time at the National Night Out event, organized by the Takoma Park Police Department, on Tuesday, August 2, 2011.  Children played corn hole and hula hoops. Check out the nice photos taken by Jay Keller and uploaded to Picasa Webalbums.

Our Dinosaur Dig event was a huge success. You can view photos on our Google Picasa Webalbum for this event. (Click on Slideshow to at the top left to see the photos presented in succession.)

Takoma Plays! works towards a community where young and old safely enjoy outdoor and indoor play as a regular part of their lives. Such play will increase physical health, mental health and a sense of well-being -- all the while forging stronger ties between diverse community members.
