I drive a Toyota Avensis. The GPS system is a build in one => DVD player underneath the driver's seat. One big disadvantage of the build in systems, is that you can not work with the system while the speed is higher that 5 km/h. I agree it is safer for the driver not to work with it while driving, but for the passenger it should be accessible. This way of working bordered me a lot. In fact so much that I decided to do something about it. My objective was : can the GPS work while driving? I removed the box from underneath my seat, did a Google search with the info found on the type label, unfortunately I did not find any useful information on how to bypass the system.
Type : ET02A Company : AISIN AW CO. LTD After measuring and comparing all the signals with a simple volt(multi)meter while standing still and while driving, it turned out to be very simple to hack it.
Do not forget to tape the ends of the wires => just preventing short circuits. It could almost not been easier! I most likely lost the warranty on my navigation system, but I can live with that ;-) I
hope this works in your car too ... have fun with it ... (If you decide
to implement this in your own car, please note that I can not be held
responsible in any way) With this hack, it was never my intention to promote unsafe driver behaviour, so please do not forget, do not operate your GPS while driving ... leave it to the passenger ... Note for Toyota : Why not combining the passenger present sensor (belt beep) with the speed sensor? This would give access to the gps while driving, only when a passenger is present. I think a lot of people would like this more than the way it is implemented right now. Link : Hack your Toyota prius GPS Navigation System |
