What is this event? A nordic ski and snowshoe tour and festival. The day begins at Gold Run Nordic Center in Breckenridge, Colorado with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and a morning at your leisure. Begin the tour at any time from 9-10 a.m. and ski or snowshoe the mellow Summit Country recreational path toward Frisco. Along the way there are stops for gourmet treats and hot beverages while you learn about the Summit County forest lands and how you can care for them. The party begins as you finish the tour at the Frisco Nordic Center in Frisco, Colorado. Here you'll be greeted with delicious food from local restaurants and a speciality brew from Backcountry Brewery. An awesome quiver of prizes for those in costume have been donated from local business from around the county and state. Costumes, fun, music, food, beer, education and a bit of exercise and fresh air are all included in this great event! Proceeds benefit Friends of the Dillon Ranger District. How much does the tour cost? Early registration is through January 9. For the traditional and 20 km tour, the cost is $50 per family and $30 per person or $100 for a costume team of four. For the shorter/kids tour of 1km to 3 km at the Frisco Nordic center only, the cost is $5 per child, $10 per adult or $25 per family. Day of registration is an additional $10. How can I register? Registration is now available at the Frisco, Breckenridge, and Gold Run Nordic centers. Online registration is available through active.com. If you need a registration form, please email tourthesummit@gmail.com. Where can I park? Parking is available at both the Frisco Nordic and the Gold Run Nordic centers. Free transportation will be provided between the two nordic centers in the morning and afternoon. If you are doing only the kids or shorter 2 to 5km tour, park at the Frisco Nordic Center. When should I get there? Day of registration and check-in for those who have already registered for the traditional or longer tour begins at 8 a.m. at the Gold Run Nordic Center. If you are parking at the Frisco Nordic Center, allow around a half an hour for transportation to the Gold Run Nordic Center. Head out on the tour anytime between 9-10 a.m. The kids/short tour will begin at 11 am at the Frisco Nordic center. Registration/check in for the kids/short tour will open at 10:30 am at Frisco. How challenging is the course? The traditional course is a 10km generally downhill course with a 400ft elevation loss. The traditional tour is suitable for beginning to intermediate skiers and snowshoers. A more challenging course will be offered that is 20km and is designed for intermediate to advanced skiers or snowshoers. For families, a kids tour and treasure hunt will be offered at the Frisco Nordic Center. The kids course is 1-3km and has specific stations designed for children's education in forest discovery. This will also be combined with a treasure hunt for children along the course! The kids/short course check in and start is at the Frisco Nordic Center. Kids/short course registration and check in opens at 10:30 am and the course opens at 11 am. Most participants take about 2 hours to complete the traditional course. What should I bring? Dress for winter weather. Layers are advisable. Join the festivity and make your outer layer a costume! All those in costume will be eligible for door prize drawing! As always, remember a hat, mittens or gloves, sunscreen, and sunglasses. The course will be groomed for both classic and skate skiing, and is suitable for touring skis to light nordic racing skis. Costumes are encouraged! A costume team of 4 people can enter for only $100 for the entire team ($25 per person!). Only those in costumes will be eligible for our prizes! Are rentals available? Rentals for both nordic ski equipment and snowshoes will be available at both the Frisco Nordic and Gold Run Nordic centers. Reservations are strongly recommended.
