I am currently a music teacher working for the New York City Board of Education.  After twenty-five years of playing the piano I was blessed enough to have had an opportunity to apply that knowledge professionally.  Asked to substitute as a music teacher implementing the program Music and the Brain has been one of the best experiences of my career.  This particular music program  is research based and has been studying the positive effects of performance in Math and Literacy for those involved in music education.  My classes consist of analyzing, reading and comprehending music notation along with its historical and cultural context, after which my students are sent to their individual keyboards to practice the song we had covered.  Becoming a teacher has proven itself to be a challenging profession.  That being said,  when approached with the utmost diligence and care it has also proven to be one of the most rewarding.

A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.  ~Henry Brooks Adams

My name is Theresa Policastro and I am currently a substitute teacher. The past school year I was a long time substitute for a first grade special education class. I enjoyed it a lot and the experience made me realize that I chose the right career. I am applying for my certification this month and hopefully will have my own class soon.

Hi there, my name is JoAnn Raccuglia, born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. I am currently a Substitute Teacher working within two schools. I have been doing this for the past year. I would like my own second grade classroom in a public school one day. I graduated from Hunter College in NYC my major was in English and minored Psychology. Then Touro Graduate School of Education was founded and I decided to come here and work towards my Masters. After this summer session I am eighteen credits completed and that much closer to accomplishing my goal.

Hi, my name is Carla Zupancic. I am the Coordinator for CSTEP (Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program) at Mohawk Valley Community College in upstate New York (Utica). It is a NYS academic program designed to foster academic excellence for under-represented or economically disadvantaged students in the STEM majors or one of the licensed professions. I have a bachelor’s degree in Finance. After working a few years in business I realized it was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I went back to school to get my master’s in education – and here I am. Although I have not had my own classroom yet, I was a substitute for a while and taught a math course at the college. I enjoy teaching others and I love the feeling when you are able to help someone succeed. But, most importantly, I am a very busy mom with three young children. Getting my education in education has also helped me with my own children. I understand the school system more and am the courses I am taking have given me more ideas to help them. It's been a great experience and I am excited about getting my own classroom in the near future. Best of luck to all of you!
