Directions to the Conference Venue

Travel to the conference venue

The conference will take place at the FCSH campus of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Goople Map Link: Address: Av de Berna, 26, 1069-060 Lisboa). You can get there by Metro (blue and red lines stop San Sebastiao [you can walk through Gulbenkian Park to get to Av de Berna]; yellow line stop Campo Pequeno), by taxi (within Lisbon's urban area, no taxi ride should cost more than €10) or by bus. Or walk if you like walking. No place should be further away than an hour's walk.

Travel to Lisbon

by plane: Many international airlines offer direct flights from European, North-American and lusophone hubs to Lisbon Airport. From the airport to town, take the aircoach or a normal bus (similar routes, though the second considerably cheaper) or a Taxi (around €10 to the old town of Lisbon). Budget airlines to Lisbon are Easy Jet, Jet2, and Air Lingus. Vueling.com is a good option if you come from Spain. Air Berlin from Germany. Portuguese Tap Air also offers similar budget tickets if booked early. Ryan Air flies to Faro, about a 3 hour ride away by high speed train (at around €35 return). If you book early, you can get uncannily cheap deals (my last flight to England cost me less than €30 return).

hitchhiking
: not sure about official regulations, but people do hitchhike in Portugal. You may inquire about good spots at the very active social networking site, www.couchsurfing.org.

carsharing: not sure if that is practices in any organised way; but the couchsurfing people generally know this; you can also ask there if anyone wants to share a car.

by moped (from the UK): ride your Moped to Southampton or Portsmouth, get a ferry to Bilbao, and get ready for the ride. You shall comfortably arrive within an 8-day journey. This has been done before using couchsurfing to find places to stay. For more information, email us and we will forward route suggestions.

by train: Portugal has a very good north-south and a rather bad west-east train network. More info and online bookings at www.cp.pt.

by coach: there are different overland coach companies, some linking Lisbon from Spain. Eurolines are not the best option so far.

by car
: well, just drive your car into town. There are all international car rental firms present. Also some very well priced options (Interrental say they offer deals from 6€ per day - no guarantees).

by space ship: there are several great landing facilities downtown; my favorite is the Miradouro in Sta Catarina where you can fix your spaceship to one of the local trees and enjoy a drink at the bar overlooking the river. If you are a beginner spaceship pilot, you may want to choose a larger square in the city; Rossio offers splendid landing fields and a nearby place to celebrate your arrival. In the unlikely event of a fatal crash-landing, mourners may acquire flowers in one of the many shops on the square.

Stay in Lisbon

Hostels and hotels: Lisbon offers any type of accommodation from luxury boutique hotels to hippy-hippy shake backpacker hostels. Many chicki-chicki hotels in Chiado and Baixa (all inside the old town; many are really nice); business hotels close to the conference side in Entre Campus (a bit outside town, 5 metro stops). There are a couple of what seems to be nice youth hostels in Santa Catarina. Please find an indicative list of hostels and hotels of different price ranges in the attachment below.

Holiday rental apartments: If you are several, or a family, it may be a good option to look into renting a tourist flat for a couple of days. See sites like LINC, Where_To_Stay, Holidaylettings or BestDwelling for different options.

Couchsurfing: If you travel on a shoestring and want to meet 'locals', go couchsurfing - it's free and (mainly) fun. We know the couchsurf community in Lisbon quite well; though you have to contact the folks yourself.

Student residence: During the summer months, the student residences are empty and offer relatively cheap rooms to short term visitors. If interested, please check out the following link.
