Tirtha

7 years ago Tirtha Thapa started having pain in her bones after the birth of her son. At that time she wasn’t a Christian and she went to a lot of people to be released from her pain. It didn’t work and she lost a lot of money. 2 years later her husband was attacked and robbed and had a bad injury on the left side of his nose. By mistake he was operated in the right side and had to have another operation. After staying 2 months in the hospital they discovered that he had cancer in his mouth. He stayed another 14 months at the hospital but no one knew how bad the cancer was and since they didn’t have medicine for that cancer and it was very expensive having him there Tirtha decided to bring him home. He died the same day. Before his death Tirtha and her children had come to know God. The family turned against them because of their believe and because they didn’t follow the Hindu traditions anymore. She made a contract with the church so they would take care of her children if she would die. Her condition was still bad and during her husband’s illness they had taken a huge loan, which she had to pay off. She arranged with the church that the two of her three children could stay at a home, where the church would take care of them. Her oldest daughter stayed with her and took care of her since she couldn’t do much herself. One night in a dream she felt God’s presence and felt like she was in a prison, but when she woke up she felt relieved from her pain. During her church leader she got in touch with Jo, who offered her a job. She still wasn’t able to do much, but Jo took her in anyway and in time she has improved. Now she is able to do the work very well. She is still paying of her loans and because she is pressured by the man who lent them the money, it is hard for her to have the money for her daughter's education, their home and for food. Still she is very thankful and trusts that God will provide for them.

Maili

Maili has two sons and one daughter. When Maili  was pregnant with Alisha, she had jaundice and meningitis. When her husband discovered the seriousness of her sickness, he left her in the hospital, never to return. Maili, though very sick herself was not willing to stay in the hospital for fear of her inability to pay her hospital bills. She was also worried about her two children at home who had nothing to eat. For the last two months of her pregnancy, she struggled with  poverty and sickness.

TouchNature staff came to know about her situation and decided to help her
family. They started to give her food and necessities for her family. At the time we did not have a vacancy in TouchNature, so did not dare to take her on as an employee, but just helped her financially.

However, after Alisha was born, Maili’s condition worsened. The family literally had nothing to eat, northey pay the rent. It was then that we decided to bring them into TouchNature. Maili started working for us, and we sent her sons to school.

Later, we found out that Alisha was deaf due to meningitis and decided to help her with a cochlear implant. You can read more about this here.

Meena

Meena came to us when her husband was sick with jaundice. She has been a tremendous help to those in need around her. In fact, she is one of the staff who took care of Maili's two boys when Maili was in hospital. She is active in caring for the spiritual and emotional health of others.

Shantu

I got to know Shantu while taking a bumpy ride on a dusty road to her village, where I was going to visit the family of some of my staff. We chatted and I heard something of her family's story. Her family is poor, and her father remarried after the death of her mother. Both her step-brother and sister are handicapped; one's growth is stunted and the other has cerebral palsy. Shantu told me she had just lost her job in Kathmandu and hinted that she needed a job.
After her return to Kathmandu, she called me and we hired her to work as one of the pioneer staff of TouchNature.

She has proven to be a good worker, hardworking and willing to learn. After some years of working with us, she has finally settled down and is happily married to a good man. They have one cute son.

Shanti

When Shanti's husband contracted bone TB, he grew terribly sick and was unable to work. The family's financial situation was dire. Shanti was then pregnant with their second child and was unable to work. With no income, they had to sleep on a straw mat on the hard floor even during cold winters. They had no food or gas to cook - the family was starving. When I was told about their situation, I tried to intervene by giving them a monthly allowance, and invited Shanti come to work at Rainbow Craft.

We have also employed her husband, because no one would hire him due to his bone TB. Both husband and wife are very thankful for being employed. They are a wonderful couple who look out for the needs of others. Shanti was one of the ladies who helped provide for Maili when her husband abandoned her.

Indira

Indira had been very sick and bedridden for a number of years. Every doctor she had seen said that she had no chance of recovery. When she was almost giving up on life, a pastor came and encouraged her. He told her that God could heal her. Miraculously, she was healed, and was able to walk and lead a normal life again.

After experiencing such healing, Indira decided to follow become a Christian. However, her husband, a strong Hindu, was furious and adamant that Indira should give up her new faith. Indira refused. Out of anger and shame, Indira’s husband chased her and their two children (then aged 7 and 4) out. He remarried and started another family.

With nowhere to go, Indira left the village and came to Kathmandu. In Kathmandu, her pastor helped her and approached us about the possibility of giving Indira a job within TouchNature. After listening to her plight, we decided to take her in. Now, her children’s schooling is being sponsored, and Indira is doing well in TouchNature.
