Perspective Sculptures

This site is designed to showcase and explain perspective sculptures, a unique type of sculpture that changes its appearance depending on the observer's viewpoint.  Below is a brief description of how they work, and on the additional pages you will find other examples of these sculptures.

Perspective sculptures are unique displays that show very clear images based on the location of the viewer.  From most angles, the sculptures are a meaningless jumble of fragments; but from two specific viewpoints, the pieces align to form two different words.  The views do not necessarily need to form words; images are possible, but are slightly more difficult because of the more detailed shapes involved.

The design is based on the concept that images are essentially 2-dimensional representations in a 3-dimensional world.  Thus a 3-dimensional object has many different projections, and with careful planning it is possible to exploit those projections.  While sculptures with this general concept have been done before, no one has ever used such a sparse and fragmented design.  For a better demonstration of the sculptures, please see the video to the left and the additional pages of designs.

I hope you enjoy seeing the sculptures.  If you have any comments or questions, whether about the website or the sculptures, feel free to e-mail me at tom.cohlmia@gmail.com.
