Had Drill this weekend, today is my off day, and school is about to take top priority until 2 May when I graduate,,,,, Again!  So, After work Sunday I drove down to Vicksburg to spend some time with my folks and ride the Vicksburg Military Park.  It was a hard ride.  Not going to lie, after two miles I had to stop and do some serious stretching and self motivation to push on.  Some how I made it 28 more miles after that stop.  Lots of wind, steep hills, and just plain tired.  All of that just because of an off day and a long weekend.  I cant imagine trying to do that on chemotherapy brain.

So, i am about to move into Sara's Aunt's Barn Apartment.  It is just of HWY 50 in Ceder Bluff, MS.  Sixty Five Acres, three farm ponds, two horses and no cable, absolutely amazing.  One minor issue.  The living area floor had carpet that stunk. Sara and I removed the carpet to find lots of padding that had molded and it was strategically placed to leave a very un-level concrete floor.  Fixed It....

Recovery Ride....  I liked yesterdays ride so much I decided to do it again, only slightly shorter and slower.  It was a surreal ride out to the half way point.  There was almost no traffic, the road was smooth, and I had a slight tail wind.  I was cooking along at nearly 20 MPH, on flat ground, with little effort just watching the scenery.  Life was simple.  I saw a few children playing, an older woman swatting cob webs with a broom, and cows doing whatever it is they do.  It was just an easy look at life.  Then it came time to turn around.  15 knot head wind, momma was yelling at the kids, and traffic just seamed angry.  What happened to the simple life?  The life before Bernie Evers, tax laws, medical insurance and Blackberries.  Why have we made things so complex?

After droping Sara at the Jackson Airport, Leaving for her Ergo confrence in Reno, NV, I drove back to Starkville, ran a few erands, took a nap and then finally desided to go on a bike ride.  I left from Sara's parents place (they have a garage to keep the bikes in) and traveled north on HWY 389.  It really is not much of a HWY.  More like a country road.  This is the rought that the Frost Bite half marathon is ran on every winter.  It was fun to see the markings on the road.  (6.55 half way, 5 miles whooo hooo,  4 miles keep it up)  I was riding the course backwards.  Made for a laugh about once a mile.

Big day at the Vicksburg National Military Park.  It has been a few years since I have set foot on that park.  Sara and I left around noon for our first lap aroud the park.  We mad a quick water stop by the Caro meusiem about 8 miles in to the ride.  The hills were steap, the grass was green, and the park was busy.  This made for a fun ride.  Sara and I finnished our first loop in 1:25.  After that she stayed at the park entrance to strech and work on some homework for her Applied Ergonomics Confrence next week.  I meet two fellas from New Orleans that were training for the New Orleans half Iron Man and we went for a second loop.  Cool guys, turns out one is a NO EMT and the other is tring to get on in the NO Fire department.  Best of luck to them both.  We rode the second lap in right at 60 min.  Fun times, but my legs are spent.

Back on the Tarmac.  I ordered a new ride from Boardtown Bikes.  Sara and I are headed to Vicksburg to visit my folks and ride the National Military Park.  Don't really want to drag the old mountain bike through those hills.  Sara and I got a little ride in after I got home from work and we ran a few erands that we need to get done before the weekend.

Today was a different workout.  Sara and I did our warm up ride from her house to Research Park just North of campus.  This park is a 1 mile loop.  We each rode around the loop as hard as we could for 15 min.  I got just over 4 laps in with split times of right at 3:30.  Then we meet back up and did a nice easy ride back to the house.

It was a late night ride around campus.  Thank goodness most of Starkville's residents are off on Spring Break.  Campus would have been empty if it weren't for the baseball game.  We won 8-4 by the way.  Woot, Go Dawgs.  NCAA Mens Tourney starts tomorrow night.  Lots of exciting stuff happening in MSU sports these days.  Seems like we are all starting to make athletic improvments.  I am feeling much better on my rides.  I will be excited to do some more miles.  Maybe durring daylight next time.  Maybe on a sweet new ride.

Back on the old Trek.  I will say I enjoy the saddle on my Trek the best of the three bikes I have ridden recently.  I liked the company even better though.  Sara and I went for a short ride up North Montgomery.  This was here recovery ride for a 28 Mile ride she did Sunday.

Another ride on a borrowed bike.  two words AAA Mazing.  I have decided I like the Roubaix Setup better than the Tarmac.  It is set up for more long distance rides.  It has these little jelly looking things inserted in the frame that are supposed to decrease road vibrations.  It works...

Ok, so Sara and I went to Board Town Bikes after running some erands.  p.s. today was my off day.  God Bless Mississippi Monday!!!  Mike, the young guru, outfited a Specilized Tarmac for me.  John, David (Bike shop owner's husband) and I went out Old West Point road to HWY 45 Alternate.  WOW, Road Bike makes bug difrence.  We were holding a steady 20 MPH pace on the way out.  I was riding that fast exerting the same or even slightly less effort than it takes me to push my Mountain Bike 14 MPH.  The Moving Average the GPS put out for the entire ride was much lower due to all the slow riding through traffic and the cool down riding toward the end of the ride.  Board Town has been gratious enough to let me bring home a Specilized  Roubaix to ride tomorrow and Wednsday.  This is a slightly more upright bike designed for more endurance riding,  The Tarmac is mor designed for highspeed sprints.  Just riding the Roubaix from the Bike shop home, I feel I like that geometry/style bike better than the Taramac, Time will tell.

I enjoyed the North Montgomery Ride so much, I repeated it after getting home from work.  It was very pleasant yet again.  I am working hard to maintain a good 14+ MPH pace on my old mountain bike.  The clip less peddles make a good difrence in my ability to maintain a higher speed longer.  They also help me have more control of the bike.  I am getting excited to try a road bike though.

I missed Friday's ride due to working from 7:30 to 10:00.  Poo on that.  This was an after work ride up North Montgomery.  It was a really good ride, the kids up that road really like to see people ride by on bikes and the adults driving by were very friendly as well.  It makes a big difference when people are polite about passing bicycles in a automobile.  Their is nothing more unnerving than an inconsiderate driver flying by too close to fast.  Simple math says 3,000 pound car + 40 MPH + 200 pound dude and bicycle = 1 quadriplegic.

 Heart Breaking
Ok, this weather is still too chilly for my comfort.  I am starting to shake the cold though.  This cold has been coming on for the last few days.  I have this irrational belief that if I ignore my illnesses, they will just go away.  Luckily, its just a little head cold.

 Umm
steady?
Blood, Sweat, Tears, and Boredom.  As some of you may know, we got some snow up in North Mississippi.  As exciting as that is,  The weather outside was a bit to frightful for me to venture out on the roads, so I set the trainer up in Sara's parents garage.  It is a lot like running on a treadmill.  Lots of hard work, limited scenery.  Nice garage stall.

Total ride time was 1:32.  This included a short stop on campus to help someone with a car problem.  We left from Sara's house and meandered through campus then really started the workout when we reached Octoc road.  We took that all the way down to MT Olive which cuts over to the Southern most part of South Montgomery.  It was a great ride.  Cold morning.  Little traffic.  We are finally getting into some distances.  I felt good about the ride.  I felt like I could have held the pace for another ten miles.  My tail is liking the new saddle.

Another pleasure ride around campus at night.  Sara and I took off at almost 10:00.  We got a late start, but it was a decent workout.  We had a rolling conversation about what the work outs were supposed to be like.  I am impressed with how much she has learned about bicycling.  Apparently we are supposed to be doing a 10 week workout plan to build to the 100 mile ride at Tahoe.  There is a 15 week plan, the one I have seen, that is geared towards people that are very new to the sport.  Sara tells me that these first few weeks are still the warm-up for the actual workouts.  I am glad we are doing these early rides.  Thay have really helped me get used to riding the bike again.

First time back on the bike in a while.  First ride on the new saddle, it was nice.  Our official training schedule started today.  It called for a 3 mile easy ride, but yall all know I am too hard headed to stop after 3 miles.  It was another night time ride through campus.  I really like the fact that I can ride from my house to and around campus at night.  That has been very helpful to start this program.  I spent a good majority of the ride thinking of fund raising.  We have decided to raffle off a bike from Board Town Bikes.  We will be printing tickets later this week.  The actual Prize will be $1500 towards a bike or bikes at Board Town.  Tickets will be priced at $10 a piece with a limit of 1,000 tickets sold.

John, Sara, and I peddled over to Board Town Bikes to meet Katie and Jan.  Then we took off own Old West Point Rd. all the way out to 16th Section Rd.  We had a good time peddling at a good comfortable pace and socializing with on and other.  I am learning more about bicycles and how our bodies work with the machine.  Conveniently, Jan is a retired physician and the owner of Board Town Bikes.  She spent a little time explaining how your bike seat effects your body.  After learning about some of the problems a poor fitting bike seat can cause, I bought a new one right after the ride.  Big Difference!!!

Except 6.9 miles of nearly crawling

I did a little over 6 miles on my own through campus.  GPS died so 6 miles is an approximation.  After that Sara and I went for a few miles through town.  It was good ride.  I have decided I like the method of riding some before and then joining Sara for the remainder of the workout.  She has gotten much faster now that she has a road bike.

I spent the week at Camp Shelby, MS.  Due to space issues I was unable to bring my bike.  I spent the week learning diffrent medical tasks and going for afternoon runs around post.  I was absolutly amazed at the number of deer just wondering around.  Nearly every morning I would chase 3 or 4 off the parkinglot on my way to chow.  MMM Army food, cover it in gravy and jalapenos.  I must have seen 100 doe last week, but only 1 buck.  Lucky guy.

Workout  This was the first ride I did on my own in a while.  I went through campus then headed west on back roads to the airport.  Briefly stopped and talked to some of my glider club buddies.  They were out flying.  I debated on taking the old 126, ours does not look near pretty as the one pictured, but I had promised to take Sara deer hunting this afternoon.

Leisurely We met Katie on the wooden bridge on the way to campus tonight.  Tooling around campus at a pace I might call meander, my mind drifted to the obesity issue effecting Mississippi and the rest of the US.  As my mind wandered, I contemplated developing a half page flier on the dangers of obesity; such as heart disease, diabetes, and furniture malfunctions.  I am also very pleased with Team in Training for promoting a fit society.  Anyone who actually prepares for and participates in a TNT event will certainly not have an obesity issue.

Casual  Another Trek around Campus with Sandra and Sara.  It was cold.  Very cold.  Cannot feel hands cold.  I kinda liked it.  We rode a few sidewalks and explored parts of campus that I had not seen before.  Also watched Sara make a sweet jump down a small set of stairs.  I nearly busted my butt trying to follow her.  Millage was recorded with Sara's new bike computer.

Casual  Trek around campus with Sara, Sandra and meet up with John on the wooden bridge near Camp Town.  John kicked my but on a sprint down by Sanderson Lake.  It was a sad realization of how out of shape I have gotten.  I also realized that my bike needed some lube.  It made more noise than most passing cars.  Overall it was a great ride.  Glad to be back on the bicycle.
