Key Points

    • Due to changes in resources they manage, developments in technology, and revisions of educational standards, a media specialist's role has evolved from the "librarian stereotype" of an introverted materials manager to the dynamic, flexible persona we often imagine now when we think of an exemplary media specialist.
    • Because of these changes, media specialists must be much more aware of their interpersonal skills and "customer service" interactions with the learning community.
    • For effective collaboration to occur, media specialist should engage in an ongoing process of self-reflection and strategy development to become aware of interpersonal skills they can hone to become more effective contributors to the learning community.
    • Improving their interpersonal skills can help media specialists gain self-confidence, communicate more clearly, improve the way they are perceived by the rest of the learning community, and ultimately, collaborate more effectively.
