Alright, so SketchUp is not actually one of my projects, but it will very likely be a component of one. Google SkeptchUp is a free 3D modelling software that allows users to create 3D objects, inlcuding artifacts, buildings and landscapes. For a public historian this could prove a very useful tool for interpretation. Using SketchUp I can create historical and contemporary streetscapes and other environments that will be very useful should my future projects include a graphic interface. The learning curve on SketchUp was not too steep, and over the weekend I was able to learn enough to create the model you see below.
As you can see from the images above, my representation is not perfect. The tower is too tall, the texture is not accurate, and some surfaces are interseced by edges which should not be there. With more time and experience, as well as proper measurements (or better approximations) through a site visit, I could perfect this example without too much trouble. However, as a first attempt, I am very pleased with the outcome.
