Diversity which encompasses culture, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, learning styles, disability, exceptionality, religion, language, race and ethnicity ( Perrow, 2006). Many of these characteristics that we choose as part of our identity may affect us as students. So if these factors affect us they will be affecting our students and how they learn. Also some of these characteristics are part of my identity and they will affect how I run my classroom. I hope that I can make sure that every student has the same opportunities and the same consequences for their actions. Also I will be flexible with my lesson plans so if a subject that the students are interested in I can make it part of the lessons in the future.
Here are some examples of lessons that teach democracy and culture to students in a classroom. The first thing that my class will be doing is to set rules that will govern our classroom and by make the student create the rules they will fell like they are part of the classroom. Second way to teach culture in the classroom is ask the children where their ancestors are from also have the children talk with their grandparents and parents to get the whole family involved in the project. Then after all of the children have talked about their ancestors I will have the child put a pin in a world map showing where they came from.
The third way is to have people from varies cultures come into classroom and talk to the children about their culture, these people could be parents or people from the community. The fourth way is to read varies children’s book written in the dialects of various cultural groups can also provide a wonderful basis for learning about linguistic diversity, as can audio taped stories narrated by individuals from different cultures ( Delpit,2002).
I know when I get my first classroom I will be thrilled to see all of those beautiful faces no matter what color they are. I believe that all teachers need to teach culture in their classrooms, because then those students will hopefully learn about others cultures in a positive light not a negative one. Many children do not have the adult guidance to show them how to treat people of a different culture correctly. Those children will learn about others culture through the television or by their friends and being educated by them they might get the wrong view of those cultures. By being opened minded and willing to be flexible in my teachings I hope to create a diverse culture in my classroom. I hope I will achieve a safe environment where my students will bring in their lives to show other children.
