A Biblical Study of the Nephilim

This is the first chapter of a book Ive been thinking about writing,I hope you find this a good biblical overview of the Nephilim (This page is Copyrighted by William Jones,2009)

Why does the Bible put such heavy emphasis on Genealogy? Not one book in the Bible seems to be without at least a short synopsis of the genealogy of its main “characters”. Why does the book of Numbers seem like a book written for the sole purpose of maintaining a genealogical record of the early Jews? Why does it recount in Genesis 6:9 that Noah was perfect in his Generations? What does Daniel 2:43 mean when it says, referring to the miry clay mixed with iron which is a symbol for the last days, that “they” shall mingle themselves with the seed of men? What are the implications of all this genealogical record in the Bible?

THE DAYS OF NOAH

I believe it goes back to Genesis chapter 6 let us read the first 9 verses now to get an idea of what this all might mean,

1 “And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born unto them,

2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh:yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

4 There were giants(Nephilim) in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old,men of renown.

5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

6 And it repented the lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

7 And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.”

Genesis 6:1-9 (KJV)

There are several key things revealed in this passage that you may not have noticed. First in verse 2 it says that the SONS OF GOD saw that the daughters of men were beautiful and that they made wives of which ever they chose.

Who are the sons of God?

Look at the 4th verse it repeats what was sated in verse 2 but goes into more detail. It plainly states that the offspring of the “sons of God” and the daughters of man were Giants and mighty men which were of old,men of renown.

The record of the offspring is the key to the identity of the “sons of God” in English but let us go a little further and look also at the Hebrew. This particular term “Sons of God” in the Hebrew is “Ben Elohim” and throughout the bible that term is only used to refers to ANGELS!

Some people have tried to read into it that the sons of God are actually the Sons of Seth and that the daughters of man are really the daughters of Cain but this theory which only really started to be accepted in the 5th century does not hold water when you look at the Hebrew and use logic.

Were all of Seth's children godly? Were all of Cains children ungodly? Certainly not.

Further getting back to verse 4 how could the offspring of believers and unbelievers become Giants in those times when there is not instance of that happening now a days between Christian and none Christian parents?

Though the “Sethite” theory is quite wrong I do respect many of those who held it including St. Augustine and I understand why they held it,the alternative while completely true based on the text is incredibly strange and frightening.

Going back to this amazing passage we read in verses 5 to 7 that these particular beings,Nephilim in the Hebrew, caused man to increase so much in wickedness that God became sorry he had ever created man and decided to destroy all living things.

Verses 8 to 9 state however that Noah found favour with God and God as we all know decided to spare him and his family. In verse 9 it also states plainly that Noah was perfect in his generations. What does that mean? I believe its clear from this passage that Noah had not been corrupted by this intermarrying between human women and the sons of God or the watchers and that that along with his godliness is why God chose Noah to be the father of post flood humanity.

Before we go on lets notice perhaps the most frightening statement in this passage,in verse 4 it states that in those pre-flood times there were Nephilim and ALSO AFTER THAT!

Also after that? Is there any Biblical evidence that the Nephilim Giants existed after the flood?

AFTER THE FLOOD

Remaining with the Biblical canon we find SEVERAL passages referring to the giants. Beginning in the Most Genealogical Book of the Bible,Numbers. In Chapter 13 we read,

1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them. 3 And Moses by the commandment of the Lord sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel.

4 And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

5 Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

6 Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

7 Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

8 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun.

9 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

10 Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

11 Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.

12 Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

13 Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.

14 Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.

15 Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

16 These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua. 17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain: 18 And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many; 19 And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds; 20 And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.

21 So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath. 22 And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs. 24 The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence. 25 And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.

26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. 28 Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan. 30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. 31 But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. 32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. 33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

Num 13:1-33 (KJV)

So what we have here is Biblical proof that a small group of the Nephilim walked on the earth long after the days of Noah as the passage in Genesis 6 records. These particular Nephilim were the sons of Anak which has some significance but we shall explore that more in a later chapter. There is an interesting theory to be deciphered explaining why a Loving Just God would call upon the Israelites too kill everyone including women and children in the land of Canaan that's roots begin in the days of Noah and also touch here but I will save that theory for later.

This passage is not the end of the Biblical record of the Nephilim. The Book of Joshua Chapter 12:1-6 records still more,

1 Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river Arnon unto mount Hermon, and all the plain on the east: 2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and from the middle of the river, and from half Gilead, even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon; 3 And from the plain to the sea of Chinneroth on the east, and unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea on the east, the way to Bethjeshimoth; and from the south, under Ashdothpisgah: 4 And the coast of Og king of Bashan, which was of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei, 5 And reigned in mount Hermon, and in Salcah, and in all Bashan, unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of Heshbon. 6 Them did Moses the servant of the Lord and the children of Israel smite: and Moses the servant of the Lord gave it for a possession unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh.

Josh 12:1-6 (KJV)

King Og was a giant and no doubt had many children that were giants, another example of the Nephilim after the flood recorded in the Bible. The story of Og and his children does not end in Joshua Og is mentioned in a number of old testament books from Numbers to Psalms. Some of these passage give interesting insights into who he was and WHAT he was beyond this brief mention of him being a giant. For example Deuteronomy 3:13 says that Bashan was well known as the land of the Giants. Deuteronomy 31:4 tells that Og was not only king of Bashan but King of ALL the Amorites. Most interesting of all Deuteronomy 3:11 reveals that Og was the last of the giants at that time and gives the length and width of his iron bed,it was 9 cubits long and 4 cubits wide or 18 FEET LONG AND 8 FEET WIDE!

As that clearly illustrates when we are talking about the Nephilim we are no talking about mere tall men we are talking about real Giants. We will come back briefly to Og,King of Bashan and the Amorites in chapter 6 were we discuss archaeological evidence of the Nephilim(See:Evidence of Nephilim Giants, The Gilgal Rephaim) but lets move on to more biblical evidence.

The most famous of all the Giants in the Biblical record would have to be Goliath. The story of David and Goliath is told to young children in every Christian church and no doubt in every Jewish Synagogue around the world.

When the armies of the Philistines and the Israelites led by Saul began to prepare for battle the Philistines decided to make the war a little more interesting. Instead of an open battle they decided to bring out there Greatest champion to challenge a 1 on 1 battle between him and any of the Israelite men,

8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me. 9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us. 10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.”

1 Sam 17:8-10 (KJV)

In a normal situation this would seem like an ideal way to do battle, letting two equal men voluntarily risk there lives in order to decide the outcome and saving all the others on both sides from having to risk there lives but the problem was Goliath had no equals among the men of Israel. Verse 4 of First Samuel Chapter 17 records that Goliath was Six cubits and a span tall or over 12 feet! Further down in verses 5-7 it records that,

5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass. 6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders. 7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.”

1 Sam 17:5-7 (KJV)

There was no one that could over power him in Saul's army so as verse 11 records they were all very afraid to challenge him.

So great was there fear as I'm sure you all remember that a inexperienced teenager by the name of David would be the one to take him down as verse 22 to 54 describe,

22 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren. 23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them. 24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid. 25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel. 26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? 27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him. 28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. 29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause? 30 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner. 31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him. 32 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. 33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. 34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: 35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. 36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. 37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee. 38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail. 39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. 40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine. 41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him. 42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. 43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field. 45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. 46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord'S, and he will give you into our hands. 48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. 52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron. 53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents. 54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.

1 Sam 17:22-54 (KJV)

There is a certain amount of Symbolism in this battle when you look at what I regard as Satan's greatest weapon. I believe that David's victory over Goliath, clearly a nephilim, was a in a way symbolic of the whole struggle between God and Satan with God clearly winning but I shall talk more about that in a moment.

There are several more scattered references to the Nephilim in the the Old testament but we have covered the most important ones already and now it is time to face the questions I posed at the beginning of this chapter. Why is the Bible so concerned with the genealogy of the people contained in it? I believe it is the same answer to why God asked the Israelites to kill ALL those who dwell in the land of Canaan not sparing the women or the children. Why would a just and loving God do that? Surely if he were so just and loving he would not have command such a horrible thing the casual reader of the Old Testament would say.

The answer to both questions is simple, God cared so much about preserving a Bloodline uncontaminated by Nephilim and therefore watcher Blood that he called for the extermination of all those people not out of hate but out of necessity. That is the same reason why the Bible is chalk full of genealogical history all these things are to maintain the purity of humanities blood not so that his “favourite race” can continue so much as that he is able to bring a redeemer into this world.

This is a profound statement I'm about to make, one I believe is completely true but which may shock you, Satan's greatest weapon may in fact not be supernatural power but Genetics. In the time before the flood Satan encouraged his demons to mix their seed with man in a deliberate attempt to thwart Gods plan of bringing Jesus Christ into the world. Satan tried but praise God almighty he did not prevail in that, still his altered plans in the same vain move forward. The battle between David and Goliath can be seen as symbolic of that very effort be Satan. Here we have a Nephilim, seed of a fallen angel and a women, doing battle with the Ancient Father of Christ and as Goliath was defeated in his attempt to kill David so Satan was defeated in his attempt to destroy the pure bloodline that would eventually have Christ as its ultimate Member!
