The world has never seen a Brit pop act as feisty as this duo. The Ting Tings conquered the world music scene with their own brand of pop that conglomerates psychedelic pop, funk and alternative rock packaged in an indie-ish underground appeal. With a sound that can’t be contained in their local town, the Ting Tings pictures breaking new grounds in the music industry. The Ting Tings is a two-man British band from Manchester composed of Katie White on vocals and guitars, and Jules de Martino on drums and bass. The duo dabbles on diverse genres by combining different sounds and musical styles like indie pop, alternative rock, dance-punk, new wave, and post-punk revival. The unique name of the band was conceptualized by Katie White through the help of a Chinese college buddy. The name the Ting Tings was taken from the Chinese word, ting, which means ‘listen’ in English. Given their unique sound, an odd-sounding name surely fits the bill. 4 years ago, the Ting Tings were only known playing in private parties and bars in Islington Mills in Salford, England. Katie White and Jules de Martino were products of different bands before finally jumping up the gun to establish the Ting Tings. Jules met Katie in Leeds University after splitting up with former band, Dead Eskimo. It was a time when both Katie and Jules felt jaded and betrayed by music studios and dreamed of forming a band with an original sound that defies conventional pop. Soon after the band has established the sound they want, they started playing in local bars and private parties. Their small performances soon created buzz around Salford with audience ranging from ordinary spectators to mogul music producers. It was in one of these performances that got them a major record deal. They got signed with a major music suit, Columbia Music, a label that brought their music to the rest of the world. Their infectious songs like Shut Up and Let Me Go, That’s Not My Name, and Great DJ soon became staple favorites in radios all over the world. Since then, praises and acclaims for the albums have boosted its sale making the band the next best representative of British Pop with a twist of their own. Along these lines, the band has dabbled with different media like videos and pictures. Ting Tings’ pictures and videos served as another way to promote their indie pop tunes. The band has gained more exposure when they received MTV nominations for the Ting Tings videos, Shut Up and Let Me Go and That’s Not My Name. Currently, the band is working on their European tour covering countries like Spain, Belgium and Germany. The commendable success of their album We Started Nothing is a testament that the Ting Tings lyrics and sounds are not just a fad. Their album has topped the UK album charts, and if this is any indication of their success, we could conclude that the Ting Tings pictures the best that British pop scene could offer. |
