FamilySearch.org is run by the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, otherwise known as the Mormons.

 

Part of the Mormon tradition is to record the genealogy of their members and this can prove an invaluable resource in your research. While it does not extensively cover all of a population that a census can it can provide some insight to a specific area and throw up some data that benefits your research.
