Hell on Halloween by Stephen Rowledge

Log 14 - Date: Oct 2nd 2018 – time 21:15

My name is Danny Kent, the date is the 31st of October 2018 and my unit has just survived the second wave of attacks. I’m not sure who came out on top on this night but many bodies from both sides lay spread across the barren land. What’s more it seems that they are getting weaker. How did things get so messed up? It’s very hard to tell exactly what made them turn back, but it’s something that hasn’t happened before and we need to find out what caused it!

In case whoever finds this comes from the Moon or Mars, or some other planet and weren’t aware of what has happened to the world, you can find the information that is worth knowing right here, entered in my log.

Two years ago on 31st of October they arrived. It is unclear where they came from, or how they got here, but this is defiantly other worldly shit right here. It took me a long time to get my head around it but one thing is for certain… they exist!

I would like to tell you that this whole thing is some Hollywood picture; that these things have been brought to life with animatronics of some sort or some amazing special effects wizardry but I would be lying and I would be putting your life at risk… believe it!!! They are real, they will kill you!!! So run, hide and do not engage unless absolutely unavoidable.

I have to go and help the cleanup crew and try to find out what happened out there tonight.

Date: Oct 3rd – time 03:00

Ok… we had a very hard job cleaning them up tonight, fewer men than usual.

I spoke to the Captain just before returning to my quarters… he has told us that we are moving to Vancouver Islands west of our position at 08:30. There has been major activity there and we have to go and try to clear it out before to many civilians are killed. We will hit Victoria first and then move up through the town and make our way to Nanaimo… so many of them, this is going to be the most difficult mission yet and there have been a few.

The first mission I went on was back in the USA. We started out in Texas with 20,000 men… it was bad. I mean it was bad everywhere, there was nothing that anyone could do to stop this from happening; they just rose from the ground. I mean who would ever believe it could happen... creatures that killed and ate the souls of human beings. The way they do it is… is just… they – they take your head clean off, suck out your soul before it has a chance to leave your body and then they reach down into your neck and pull out your heart. Then they eat it.

The rest of what they do if they get the chance is too sick to remind oneself, so let’s just say that you wouldn’t want them to do it to you.

We barely escaped from Texas with 13,000 men, before moving onto Louisiana, where we lost another 2,000 men. From there we travelled to Mississippi, Arkansas where there was less activity, meeting another 10,000 soldiers before moving on to Missouri. 21,000 men entered Missouri, 14,000 left.

I heard over the radio when I was in the captains trailer that the UK had lost 10% of their army in one week, France 12% and Germany 9%, after that I was ordered out of the trailer by the captain.

This has to be hell on earth.

Anyway, I better get some sleep, tomorrow is going to be along day. I will update more when I can.

Date: Oct 5th – time 6:00 am Vancouver Island

It has taken us over a day to get here; luckily we met with hardly any resistance. We have joined with 2,000 men from the Islands reserve TA. I had a look around with some of the men and the town is very quiet, too quiet… one thing is for certain, they know we are here.

The captain has told us to stay close to the shore which I think is a bad idea as we only have one way to go… and it isn’t exactly summer time.

Many hours after our arrival passed before we had a whiff of our enemies and when we did we were surprised to find them just watching us from a distance. I don’t know which is scarier, them attacking us on site or standing there watching us, maybe they are deciding how to eat us or maybe they are planning an attack. What we don’t know is whether they are intelligent or just mindless killing machines driven by their hunger for our souls. In most of our battles we have either driven them back or been overwhelmed by their numbers and retreated. Either way, I’m not looking forward to finding out.

Damn! How could I have forgotten that?

Two months ago a friend of mine from unit 4 was sent to New York, he had been involved in a battle where the creatures retreated; and when the unit began to leave they were attacked, took by surprise.

The creatures had doubled back and attacked when the unit was at its weakest. Shit, I must tell the Captain.

Time is 9 am.

I went to the Captain and told him of what I had remembered; he wasn’t amused… he said my friend was full of shit the creatures are nothing more than mindless creatures, driven by their hunger

My friend is no liar and if he says that these things are intelligent enough to double back, then I believe him, no matter what the captain and his advisors think.

I have to say I am beginning to get suspicious about the captain, he has been very tense lately and the way he jumped down my throat when I told him the story made that suspicion stronger. I know he is on edge, shit, we’re all on edge, but there is something that isn’t quite right. I’m going to watch him carefully.

That is the third time in four hours that I have looked outside of my tent; they are still there watching us. Why don’t we just get out there and kill them? Kill them before they kill us. I know the captain isn’t happy sitting about waiting, not when they are only a few miles away on some hill tops… god knows how many civilians they have stashed up there, scared, not knowing when they are going to be dinner, whether their country is going to save them.
