The Family Tribunal

The Family Tribunal is located at Victoria House in Victoria. It is the court of first instance when it comes to domestic disputes. It handles child custody disputes, maintenance, violence in the home etc. A Chairman presides at this tribunal with 2 members. The Chairman is generally a qualified lawyer whilst the members are individuals experienced or somehow connected with domestic/social affairs institutions.

Although the Family tribunal is a court of law, procedure is not followed strictly. This speeds up the process and more often than not, individuals represent themselves before this tribunal. This saves the individual from having to incur legal costs. But this also means that proceedings can get very hectic and emotional.

An individual disatisfied with a decision of the tribunal may appeal to the Supreme Court of Seychelles.
