The Rent Control Board

The Rent Control Board (often simply referred to as the "Rent Board") is in charge of dealing with tenancy disputes. It is the first port of call for eviction orders. It sits only twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday afternoon and is presided by a Chairman and two members. The members are usually lay persons experienced in housing matters whilst, the Chairman is generally the Senior Magistrate by default. Its offices are located in the Supreme Court Building and it uses the "A" court to hear cases.

The Rent Board is where tenancy disputes should be heard, especially applications for evictions. However, there is a tendency for lawyers to attempt "back-door eviction" applications through the Supreme Court as it actually takes so much time for anything to happen before the Rent Board. There are numerous reasons for such delay, but one primary reason has been the lack of a permanent Chairman of the Rent Board.
