Gabrielle Murphy's song about Sam the Koala

SAM THE KOALA

She fled before the roaring heat her home was wrapped in fire.
Her breath was short, her tortured feet, she could not afford to tire.
All around her there was blackened earth and fiery burning embers
She struggled on through all the smoke, through ash, and burning cinders.
And then, she saw the fighting men with precious tanks of water.
Could she make it through the heat before exhaustion caught her?

PLEASE HELP ME I’M CRYING
MY HOME IS GONE, AND I’M ALL ALONE
WON’T YOU BE A FRIEND AND LEND A HAND
SAY YOU’LL EASE MY PAIN, LET ME LIVE AGAIN
ONE DAY SOON WHEN THE RAIN COMES DOWN
I’LL FIND THE STRENGTH TO CARRY ON
ALL I ASK OF YOU, IS TO SEE ME THROUGH TILL THEN
PLEASE HELP ME, BE MY FRIEND

She saw a kindly looking man a-leaning on his truck
A precious drink was in his hand, she could not believe her luck.
She watched with envy as he drank he too was hot and dry.
Exhaustion gave her courage and she gave a plaintive cry.
He looked at her with reddened eyes and held her tiny paw
He shared with her his water she could never want for more

I WILL STOP YOU FROM CRYING
YOUR HOME IS GONE BUT YOU’RE NOT ALONE
I’ll BE YOUR FRIEND, SO TAKE MY HAND
LET ME EASE YOUR PAIN, SO YOU’LL LIVE AGAIN
ONE DAY SOON WHEN THE RAIN COMES DOWN
YOU’LL FIND THE STRENGTH TO CARRY ON
OH I’M TELLING YOU THAT I’LL SEE YOU THROUGH TILL THEN
I’LL HELP YOU, TILL THE END

He gently took her in his arms so urgent was the cause
And drove her to the shelter and they bandaged up her paws
The gum trees would regenerate and she’d go home again.
Now Sam the koala’s in the Folklore Hall of fame.

SOMEONE SAVED ME FROM DYING
MY HOME WAS GONE, I WAS ALL ALONE
I FOUND A FRIEND, WHO TOOK MY HAND
HE EASED MY PAIN, SO I’D LIVE AGAIN
NOW I KNOW WHEN THE RAIN COMES DOWN
I HAVE THE STRENGTH TO CARRY ON
AND I’M HERE BECAUSE OF THE LOVE HE SHOWED ME THEN
I’LL ALWAYS, BE YOUR FRIEND

We are young Australians together we will carry on
No drought or fire or flooding rain
Will break our spirit, we’ll rise again
We are proud Australians we share a bond, knowing we belong
One Family, a community of friends
Australians to the end

There are heroes everywhere, be a hero show you care
There are heroes everywhere
We are all Australians to the end
