This is the website of the Russellian Society, the philosophy
society of the University of Sydney. We were established in 1975, and
are a student-run body affiliated with the Department of Philosophy & the Sydney University Union. We meet weekly to discuss philosophy, & throughout semester hold seminars by established philosophers. Our aim is to encourage the spread of philosophical ideas and discussion amongst the student body. One way of addressing what philosophy is, is to say that philosophy concerns itself with "What should we believe?" and to that end concerns itself with methods for examining what we should believe, and what follows from what we already believe. One might say that if humans are anything, we are believing creatures. Seen this way, philosophy is an activity which we are always and already engaged with, and we are 'doing philosophy' when we are making an organised effort to be exact & systematic about our beliefs. Philosophers at Sydney University have made a contributions across a wide range of fields. Many people are surprised to find that somebody labeled a "philosopher" might be making important contributions in subjects as broad as Epidemiology, Ecology, Physics, Mathematics, History or Anthropology. If you do philosophy, you will be exposed to ideas from every subject that humans rationally inquire into. |
