Sound, Vision and Attention

Project Information

Thank you for thinking about taking part in my final year project, which will form the basis of my BSc (Hons) Psychology degree, here at UWE, Bristol, UK. Before you agree to take part, it is important that you understand what this study entails. Please take time to read through the following information. Do not hesitate to email me if there is anything that is not clear.

What will I be required to do?
After completing an online consent form you will need to complete a questionnaire about how you think and feel in general, you will then be asked to complete a task, which will require you to pay attention to and rate a stimulus on the screen. There are a number of different conditions that participants which may require you to to complete the task whilst listening to a sound of some sort. For this it would be best if you completed the task with headphones, or whilst in a quiet room. After the task you will be asked to complete another questionnaire about how you felt during the task.

Are there any requirements?
You should try and remove all distractions whilst taking part in the study and ensure you have speakers or headphones attached to your computer.

How long will it take?
This study should take no more than 25 minutes to complete

What benefits are there to taking part?
Participating in this research will give you the chance to experience what it is like to be part of an experimental study.

What if I don't want to complete certain questions?
If you do not want to complete certain questions, feel free to leave these blank and move on to the next questions. Obviously the more you complete the more comprehensive data we will collect, but there is no obligation or requirement to complete the questions.

Can I withdraw?
Of course. You are free to withdraw at any time by closing your browser window.

What will happen to my data?
All of the data which you provide for this study will be kept confidential, and kept on a password protected online survey and then downloaded to a password protected computer file. Your data will not be able to be identified with you as all the data is anonymous. The project will be written up as part of my third year project for my BSc Psychology degree at UWE, however you will never be personally identified. The computer data and the resulting analysed data will be held for as long as it retains research value.

The anonymous data may be made available for further appropriately approved research at the University. No data will be published in a way that could identify individual participants.

What are the potential problems involved in taking part?
This study is very straightforward and does not involve a great risk of harm. However, the study does involve reflecting on yourself and reporting how you feel, which some people may find uncomfortable. If you do feel that this study brings up issues you would like to discuss further, please contact the researcher, counselling services (if you are a UWE student), or your GP.

If you have questions about the research - either now or at some future date, please contact Victoria Officer or Paul Redford.
