Logging in to Think Central

posted Jan 24, 2012 10:14 AM by L M   [ updated Jan 24, 2012 10:15 AM ]

Our Math Books are available to students online!  This can be useful to review concepts, help when students are absent, or if a child forgets their Homework & Remembering Book.
  • First, go to www.thinkcentral.com
  • Click Mathematics and choose the Math Expressions link (purple writing)
  • Fill out the necessary info (NC, Wake County, Cedar Fork Elem)
  • Students must fill in the username and password
    • Students should know their individual username; all passwords are set to be "stingray"
    • Please email me if your student doesn't know their username; it is the same as the one they use for Discovery Education and Study Island
  • Then click the "Things to Do" link
  • Click "My Library"
  • Click Math Expressions "Activity Book" (you can then skip the intro if you want to)
  • Choose the appropriate volume (Volume 1 is usually Quarters 1 & 2; Volume II is usually Quarters 3 & 4)
  • You can then navigate to whatever page you are looking for in the hardcover math book or scroll through the Table of Contents if your child cannot remember the page
  • The way you can see the homework is by going to the page in the hardcover book that is associated with the homework (you can also scroll through the table of contents)
    • For example, today we did some work with p.279 in class, so type "279" in the "Go to page" and click Go
    • Today's page that we worked on will show up (it should look familiar to your student)
    • In the blue task bar at the top, there is a smaller bar that says "Unit 1 Resources"
    • If you click on that Resources drop down menu, you will see "Homework 7.1"
    • Click "Homework 7.1" and it will pull up a printeable version of this page; the "Remembering" page is also available
Please feel free to contact me with any questions!

Ordering Recorders

posted Jan 12, 2012 5:59 AM by L M   [ updated Jan 12, 2012 6:03 AM ]

Fourth graders will be introduced to the recorder this year!  If you would like to acquire your child's recorder through the school, Ms. Long, our Music Teacher, will be ordering recorders that come with a storage case and a fingering chart.

The price is $2.50.  She has recommended buying 2 so that each student may have recorder to keep at school and a recorder to keep at home.  Forms are due January 20, 2012.  Checks need to be made payable to Cedar Fork Elementary School.

If you have any further questions, Ms. Long can be contacted via email at clong2@wcpss.net.  I am also happy to pass along any questions or concerns to her!

Holiday Book Exchange

posted Dec 14, 2011 5:59 AM by L M

The 4th grade classes will be having a
Holiday Book Exchange on Wednesday, December 21st!
Please send in a new or gently used chapter book that you think a 4th grade student would like to read.
This should be a book that a girl or boy would like to read.  Please wrap the book so it will be a surprise.  Students will participate in a fun actvitiy to exchange the books.

Please send  in your book by Monday, December 19th.
If you would like to send in an extra book, it would be greatly appreciated.  We would like every student to be able to take home a new book to read over winter break!

Thank you!

Animal Research Project

Animal Research Project Information

Researching at School

Each of the Fourth Grade classes will be conducting all aspects of the research process in class (locating information, taking notes, writing a paper, and completing a habitat diorama).  There is a timeline of our research endeavor at the bottom of this sheet.

Researching at Home

Your child is encouraged to find and print information about his or her animal at home on the Internet.  Any books from your home or the public library that your child would like to bring in to use as a resource are also encouraged.  Our request is that all the note-taking and paper-writing are to be completed in class.

Creation of the Diorama Habitat

Students will need to bring an empty shoebox to create the diorama of the animal habitat no later than Wednesday, December 14th.  All of the designing and creating of the animal’s habitat must be completed during class writing time.  While students will create the diorama independently during class time, you are welcome to send in items for your child to use to create and decorate the habitat.

·      Please note that students will be provided with construction paper, glue, markers, crayons, and colored pencils.  Any additional items are optional if your child is interested (examples: pipe cleaners, pom-poms, foam, string, clay, etc.).

Family Celebration Breakfast

On Wednesday, December 21st, students in all classes will showcase their completed research papers and dioramas at a celebration breakfast in the fourth grade classrooms.  Family members are invited to attend and view the students’ hard work.  An online sign-up genius will be created so that attendees can sign-up to bring food and drinks to help us celebrate! J

Timeline of the Research Project

  • Research in class……………………………………….Monday, November 28th-Tuesday,  December 6th
  • Paper writing in class.…………………………….Wednesday, December 7th-Wednesday, December 14th
  • Work on habitat diorama.....………………….Thursday, December 15th- Monday, December 19th

Check out the "Student Creations" page under "Student Links" for some awesome "How-To's" that the students typed.  Check the page later this month to see some parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines that the students photographed when they went on a "Line Hunt" throughout Cedar Fork!
