Biodiversity:  Describes the wealth of species in the world.

Environmentalist:  Person who is concerned about, and wants to protect, the environment.

Global Warming:  The warming of the atmosphere, which also causes the surface of the Earth to heat up.  Many scientists believe gloabl warming is caused by greenhouse gasses.

Greenhouse Effect:  Natural process that traps warm air around the Earth's surface, in a similar way to glass in a greenhouse, making it warm enough for life.

Welcome to The Living Green website!

Living an environmentally-friendly lifestyle is a growing concern in today's society.  As responsible citizens it is important to take care of the environment we live in, and we can each do our part by making small changes in our everyday lives.  Some of the environmental issues we face are energy crisis, pollution, global warming, protecting wildlife, population explosion, transportation and recycling.  This website will help you to learn more about what you can do to help care for our environment including facts, useful terms, games and links to informative websites.

Did you know...
  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to keep a light bulb lit for 12 hours!
  • Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour.
  • 45,000,000 - The number of barrels of oil saved each year by using public transportation.
  • 13 - The number of pounds a person would lose if they walked one half hour a day instead of riding or driving a motor vehicle. If every US citizen between the ages of 10 to 74 walked this equivalent each day rather than drive, our carbon dioxide emissions would be decreased by 64 million tons.
  • Americans use approximately 2.2 billion pounds of pesticides every year. Research shows that target pests will eventually develop resistance to these pesticides anyway.Seventy-three different kinds of pesticides have been found in groundwater, which is potential drinking water.

Tips for Living Green!
  • Take shorter showers... long showers waste hot water.  You can even install a water-saving shower head!
  • Know what you want from the refridgerator before you open the door.  Leaving the door open makes the refridgerator work harder to cool.
  • Use compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs... if every household in the country replaced just one incandescent with a CFL, consumers would save 600,000,000 dollars per year.
  • Take public transportation whenever possible...  buses and trains use less gas per passenger than cars.
  • Walk or ride a bicycle for short trips... your feet use no gasoline!
  •  Bring your own reusable bag when you go shopping... each year in the United States we use 380 billion plastic grocery and product bags that end up in landfils... it takes 1,000 years for a plastic grocery bag to decompose.
  • Use your own reusable water bottle.
  • Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
  • Eat organic food as this encourages farmers to stop using pesticides which harm the environment.
