National Launch of adult learners’ book “backbone”,

A book of poetry, prose, paintings and photography compiled by adult learners in Perth and Kinross was launched on Wednesday 26 October at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh.

Adult learning students and staff travelled to Edinburgh along with Lifelong Learning Convener, Councillor Liz Grant, to see their book being officially archived at the National Library of Scotland and to tour some of the Library exhibitions as part of their studies.

The book, titled ‘backbone’ is a collection of stories, poems and pictures gathered by the Perth and Kinross Adult Literacy and Numeracy (ALN) Partnership in memory of an inspirational volunteer tutor who died in 2008.

Following Andrew’s death, learners supported by staff, successfully applied to the ‘Awards For All’ Big Lottery Fund for a grant of £5,500 to launch the project and to cover publishing costs. Fundraising efforts by the project organisers generated a further £500.

Workshops led by various writers were organised to inspire and start the learners on their writing journeys. Artists were involved with students from Carnegie College at Perth Prison in making art expressions for the book. Some learners worked together to write group poems and others created photography pieces.

Backbone will now be used as a resource to inspire future adult learners in Perth and Kinross, and to demonstrate what is possible if they work towards a goal.

Approximately 60 learners contributed to the project and 1,000 recipients will receive a copy of the book locally through the ALN Partnership.

It is intended that "backbone" will be used as a learning resource and be an inspiration for the continuing literacy work in Scotland for many years to come.

Article in Perthshire Advertiser November 1st 2011

"The book entitled “backbone” compiled by adult learners in Perth and Kinross was launched at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh on 26 October 2011. The publication was the culmination of three years of work by adult learners and young people in Perth and Kinross, tutors, partners and volunteers. The group of learners supported by the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Partnership (ALNP) successfully applied to the Awards For All to fund their writing project and cover the publishing costs. The ALNP works with approx 1000 learners every year, as a result of projects such as “backbone” adult learners who have been through the learning process become champions and advocates of literacies learning."
