Kyle Anger

     DJ Instructor for The Lab

The sound of a record moving back and forth to a beat has always interested Kyle Anger. Though his musical background started in classical percussion and jazz/funk drumming, he was introduced to the world of hip hop and it wasn’t the rapper’s rhyming words but the rhythm of the kuts by the DJ that enthralled him. Even before he could afford turntables he used his grandmother's old belt driven turntable to listen to records. At age 15 he sold his drum set to buy turntables, an investment that easily paid for itself. Starting with basic equipment and no technical know-how, Kyle began to experiment with the turntables. He did research online and read books, priding himself in knowing not only the history of DJing, but of hip-hop as a whole. Though he was trapped in his bedroom for years his skills in scratching grew from listening to DJ’s such as Babu, Q-Bert, D-Styles and Revolution. He did dances for his high school, UVM and for private parties but never found solace in them. Instead he continued to practice turntablism and using the turntable as an instrument. Six years later Kyle joined The Lab/Lotus team after coming to their open house and displaying not only his skills on the decks but an enthusiasm for helping other kids learn new techniques. A learning environment like The Lab was not available to him at an earlier age, but was something he had always wanted to be a part of. Finally all of his research and dedication to the ones and twos could be shown to others and maybe influence them to look at the turntables not as a media player but as an instrument and an extension of musical creativity.
