Travis and I moved to Colorado from Minnesota in September 2007. The Rocky Mountains are definitely a change from the flat, boring Midwest! We love to hike (Travis more than me) and have done quite a bit since moving out here. Since I have so many pictures from these trips, I will just post the link to each slideshow in Picasa Web Albums. (These aren't the only hikes we've done; just the bigger ones that we've actually taken pictures of!)
Hiking
This was a hike we did in Rocky Mountain National Park soon after moving to Colorado. By the end, my calves were SO sore! Distance: 10 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: 1,430 feet
This is a peak really close to Boulder. It got pretty steep near the top but it was so worth it for the view! The worst part of the hike was actually the way back...it was downhill the...whole...way. Distance: 7.6 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: 2,461 feet
Travis did this hike by himself before he started his job after we moved (I was already working). I'm not sure about the distance or elevation gain.
We hiked this peak (separated from Bear Peak by a saddle) on July 4, 2008. It was a gorgeous day for a hike and a lot of the trail was in the shade. But this was by far the hardest hike I've done--not the longest or the highest elevation but the most straight up (1,800 ft elevation gain in about 1.1 miles, to be exact). I didn't think I would make it--I started getting dizzy and nauseated. But I made it to the peak, which I was able to enjoy for about 30 seconds before all the bugs at the top forced to me to leave. Distance: 7 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: 2,949 feet
Travis did this hike by himself the day after we did South Boulder Peak. I opted to not go because I didn't want to attempt a 14-er without all of my strength. After hearing about the trip (the sawtooth and the miles of muck at the end), I was happy with my decision. Distance: 6.3 miles Elevation Gain: 3,000 feet
Camping
My first backpacking experience EVER. It was fun (and I want to do it again) but my legs got tired a lot faster than they normally do! I don't remember where we went but the hike was about 2-3 miles in.
We went to Guanella Pass twice--one with some friends from Travis' work and another time with our friends, Mark and Sarah Norman. It wasn't planned to go there twice--Travis had already made the campground reservation for the 2nd time before we had planned on going the first time! It was great both times though.
