First Colonies Who were the first colonists…the Pilgrims? Well, even before the Pilgrims stepped foot on Plymouth Rock, we find (or cannot find) the Lost Colony of Roanoke and try to solve that mystery. After that, we meet settlers in Virginia trying to make a go of it in Jamestown (1607). It’s not until 1620 that we finally meet the Pilgrims in Massachusetts…the place they decided to settle after being blown off course while heading to Virginia. Nee Nee patiently listens while Tito sings the Disney Pocahontas song and then sets her straight about her history facts. Learn about the many uses of corn, stained glass (the first industry in the Colonies…glass blowing) and life on the Mayflower. Our history co-op days usually consist of 2-3 activity stations. During our First Colonies Tour, students learn how glassblowing was one of the Jamestown colonists first attempts at industrialization and today, if you visit Historic Jamestown, you can stop by a 17th century style glass house. One of stations includes information about glassblowing, working with stained glass and then students will make a stained glass leaf to take home (out of paper, of course!) |
