The Heritage of Yawnogard, is a novel created from a dream I had many years ago. When I told my son about the dream over a period of two hours, he sat there enthralled and told me to write it down as it sounded like a Disney movie. I took his advice and in my spare time wrote it out in longhand as I didn't own a computer. It lay dormant for a little over a year while I moved from Florida to Las Vegas seeking employment. After getting acclimated to the dry heat, I heard about a writer's group at one of the bookstores and was instantly hooked on writing. With a little help from one of the more experienced writer's James Goodlett, he set me on the right path. James and I have remained friends and collaborators while our lives took different avenues. Through the years of rewrites and downtimes for work and vacations, I maintained my own writer's group and have done so for nearly nine years. My writers' group is not geared to give you a pat on the back just for writing, but we are there to crit and be supportive if you are willing to put forth the effort and listen to the varied members of the group, as they are the same critics who will be part of the general public who will be reading your final book. If we don't understand what you are saying in your narrative or your dialog, then how do you expect others who will be reading your work to understand? I only wish that I could spend my time writing the many stories that are living in my head. Unfortunately, one must eat, and my job has to come first. To be a writer you must have imaginative ideas and the wherewithal to forge ahead and put them on paper. Even if you don't write a book, they can become stories for your children or grand-children to read or be read to. Writing is something you do for yourself and for others if you so choose. Another writer once said, "Everyone says they want to write a book someday. Those that do have done something that others can't or won't, but will continue to talk about. If you write a book and sell it, then you have gone the extra mile and accomplished what others are still talking or dreaming about." | What would you do if you found a large chest in a cave? Would you think treasure and open it? That’s what teen brothers John and Ian do. Their treasure is a crystal shard and a baby dragon named Tabor. They bring the dragon home on a leash and hide their new friend in the garage in a small Pennsylvania town. Discovery of the dragon begins my 131,000 word fantasy novel, The Heritage of Yawnogard. Tabor telepathically tells how they are all linked through the living crystal shard. Stunned at these revelations, they are further shocked when G.W. Merlone, their grandfather, reveals his true identity as The Great Viator of Yawnogard. The tale of his birth on a dying planet and guiding his race and its dragons to refuge on Earth reveals another ages-old secret; among the names he has been known in the past is . . . Merlin.
Merlin prepares the boys for their destiny by training them in dragon-riding, cave-flying and telepathy, for they must return to Yawnogard. Transported through a spatial doorway provided by the living crystal, they instantly alight 125,000 light years away on a once idyllic water planet, now a planet of ice and turmoil. Their mission is to fly through a pitch-black, thousand-mile-long tunnel to heal the wounded, sentient Mother Perecry crystal, who resides within a mountain and controls Yawnogard’s fate. The sentient endows the boys with additional abilities needed to battle the evil wizard, Kradark, his black dragon and the multitudes of blind cannibalistic humanoids – former sentinels of the living crystal.
Unlike other Merlin and dragon stories, The Heritage of Yawnogard relates a tale of two youths coming of age who are predestined to claim their birthright bestowed on them eons before.
