I am Do Van Cong, I am a Vietnamese artist. I design, produce and offer for sale exclusive gemstone paintings mounted on wooden panels. These special quality paintings are designed to be ornamental wall hangings on the walls of a 5 Star Hotel, or in an Exhibition Hall, a Show Room or in your living room. This is because these paintings are specially hand-made with gemstones of various sizes and colors to match natural or artistic renderings of portraits and natural sceneries. And also because they represent the exotic
culture and traditions of Oriental Vietnam.
I choose gemstones for my paintings for very special reasons. Gemstones are not only worn as a mere ornament or for
snob value, they also affect the mind and soul of the persons who wear them and those around them. Historically, mighty kings and resplendent queens in many countries have worn these gems and carried them around on their persons as symbols of great
power, charm and strength. They wore gemstones embedded in their crowns, as rings and signets on their fingers, and they believed that these gems and stones made them indefeatably powerful, irresistibly charming, more intelligent
and smarter, always an edge over their opponents.
Similarly, wealthy Egyptians, Romans and Indians used these gems as aphrodisiacs to keep themselves healthy and virile. There are also many other practices involving gemstones, like soaking them in water before drinking it, to impart extraordinary powers to those drinking the water, using the gems for body massages, and even in baths aimed at
transferring energy, as a prevention and cure from
diseases, and to improve supernatural skills of accurately prophesizing future events.
I pay a lot of attention to each painting, and through personalized care, I design and produce customized paintings for exclusive settings, locations, and even occasions.
And the result in each case is a creative work of art that merges with your particular setting, one that embelishes the ambience of the location and/or the occasion.
I make these paintings from specially selected gem stones and mounted on durable wooden panels. I make them with my own hands, and with simple native tools. I also have my artisan apprentices to help me with the designs, the wooden panels and the painting itself.
While the presentations are traditionally Vietnamese, the craft itself is still new here even in Vietnam. I collect these gemstones from North and South Vietnam. Many local people are involved in finding stones compatible for my art. While
visitors admire my paintings, they also comment they have never seen these paintings anywhere else, either inside Vietnam or outside.
So I am something of a pioneer myself, and hope to build up this art among
my community members to popularize this craft as a means of earnings for their families. The designing and producing the paintings do not need much space, and the interested artisans can do this in their own living rooms. One day soon, hopefully, this art will provide job opportunities for my people offering exclusive Vietnamese art
and craft to the world outside and securing for themselves more comfortable lifestyles, with better health, better schooling for their kids, and hopes for a better future for all concerned.
