 Welcome to the world of Sappanwood.

Sappanwood is a plant that is famous for its  medicinal abilities as an anti-bacterial and also for its anti-coagulant properties. Sappanwood extract is used in food coloring, silk and as a herbal drink.  The red wood produces a valued type of reddish dye called

brazilin, used for dyeing fabric as well as making red paints and inks. 

Sappanwood or Sapanwood (Caesalpinia sappan, Japanese: suou) is a sort of Brazil wood that is related to legumes found in tropical Southeast Asia and the Malay Archipelago. It was first called "brezel wood" in Europe.

I am Rajitha Nair and I live in Bali, Indonesia. As a pioneering one-man army, I started my own business in Sappanwood. I do this business now with my sweet, trustworthy Javanese partner Rahmati. We collect the wood from the neighboring villages, engaging local villagers, and

export it to many destinations around the world. We always pay the villagers high, so that this becomes a supplementary source of earnings for the males engaged in cutting the wood, and for the housewives in dressing it to suit my commercial requirements. Many of these families literally secure their regular livelihood through Sappanwood.

We have our own staff, 9 of them in fact, for processing the wood to its exportable finish and packaging it before dispatching it in containers, and all related activities. We sometimes also use the local manpower to help us with the packaging and transporting whenever  our own staff cannot cope up with the w

orkload. In our present situation, we have provided work for more than 25 families, in our village, in sappanwood export.

Born in Malaysia in a simple family I came to Bali to do MBBS, but then dabbled in travels and other ventures before homing in on Sappanwood. While living alone with friends, I

teamed with Rahma and have been exporting Sappanwood, sandalwood and some spices from the Oriental hinterlands. After years of struggle, I am now able to run my export business on my own.

We have now taken to exporting umbrellas, and are also planning to expand our business to importing certain other spices and Basmati rice to Bali, and exporting exotic fruits like

Rambuttan, Mangostin, Durian, Kiwi fruit and Strawberry, to wherever there is demand for them.

During our leisure time, we also help out in getting animals adopted by families. We collect dogs and cats, puppies and kittens off the streets, feed and nurse them to good health. We bathe them with shampoo, towel them, get them vaccinated and certified by the veterinarian, before they are ready to be sent for adoption. We have a group of volunteers to help us in grooming and nursing them. Many of these

cute innocent animals have so far found loving homes in many Western European countries and others too.

We have taken this up as a serious project and I have many pets at my own home, too. I have 6 cats, 3 kittens, 1 dog and 1 chimpanzee, too. This chimpanzee belongs to a rare, protected species. I am thrilled to spend my time with them, and to find that they are just like us in many ways, a part of this beautiful earth. I observe them and learn a lot of things from them. It is a very nice world out here.

We intend to build up our Sappanwood business and to engage many more villagers, even from the neighboring villages and provinces to help us with it. Once I am more complacent with it, I intend to go back to college to finish my MBBS, before launching a health related community service in the villages. When I see the innocent villagers smiling at me, I see my own family smiling back at me.

Indonesia is a beautiful country, loaded with natural resources, and with abundant man power facilities too. We intend to educate and invite more and more enterprising youth to take up agro based activities. Our target is to involve more than 10,000 families i

n this business in the long run.

We hope to inculcate a sense of propriety among poor farmers, as partners in this  business activity, and to invite them to export sappanwood direct, without middle men, in the model of a co-operative society. We want them to earn proportionately to their efforts - more sweat, more gain - and enjoy what they do. We want them to build this industry together, as a shared enterprise, and invite other youth and volunteers to join, even from foreign lands.

It is our vision that this will bring about a wave of economic consolidation among our poor farmers, and provide more schools, health care and recreation to their children, so that the future generation will learn to dream more.

One of these days, we intend to start a Foundation, something like Bali Cat Adoption and Rehabilitation Center for these cats, and also for other abandoned animals. At this

26th year of my age, this is part of my dream.

The little 1-month-old kitten in this picture was found discarded in a drain, emaciated and with one eye blinded. We nursed it with cat milk and medicines and she is recovering now.
